I was heading down Highway 50 in Folsom, CA and saw this truck in front of me; it looked a little unsafe to be driving behind so I passed him. I grabbed a photo of his load of miscellaneous steel scraps, and wondered where he was going to bring all that steel. Then it dawned on me that there is Schnitzer Steel is located in Rancho Cordova at 12000 Folsom Boulevard.

Steel recycling in Sacramento

Though it has been a while since I have been to this large metal recycling site, it is quite the operation. Schnitzer Steel is a global leader in the metals recycling industries, with locations in many areas of the country; six in California alone.

Steel Recycling

It wasn’t until doing some research on Schnitzer Steel that I discovered that they own Pick and Pull.  Pick-n-Pull is an industry-leading chain of self-service auto parts stores providing recycled original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts at incredible prices.

Recycling companies are pretty cool but I must say, that is a little un-nerving to have to follow!

I was also wondering how they get it stacked in the first place Laura.

I like the large recycling centers because we can see how the materials can be reused, not just bottles and cans.

It is probably very illegal for them to be driving with that truck full like that.

Recycling is actually a losing proposition for many municipalities.

I'm not up on the steel scrap hauling laws, it just looked dangerous.  :)

I have heard that the recycling programs can be costly Erv.

My first thought upon seeing your picture --- OMG. Is that properly secure? What if bits and pieces of steel come up and hit anyone following it?

And the next thought was...hmmmm. Burning Man.

I saw all the pieces hanging out and was concerned with the "bits and pieces" myself Pacita.

Burning man, your funny!

Tom, I wouldn't want to be driving behind that guy either!  And I've made use of those pick and pull parts places over the years for non-critical parts.  Nice to save a bunch of bucks vs. brand new.

Good morning Tom. If I didn't see the picture you posted I wouldn't have believed it. Scary. Good thing you passed him.

I'm not much of a mechanic Bliz, I wouldn't know what to pick or pull!  :)

I had no idea that Schnitzer Steel owned Pick and Pull, it makes sense though.

If he had a stack of pillows it may not have been so bad; but steel hurts!

Thanks for your comment Sheila.

Wouldn't want to be behind that load either Tom! Excellent localism post on Schnitzer Steel though and nice to know steel is reused like this.

Putting a real estate slant on the recycling business, I sure wish the recycling centers would be more discriminating about who they're buying copper from.  The theft of copper from HVAC equipment, construction sites and the like is rampant at commercial properties.  Just this week over $30,000 worth of damage was done to the HVAC system on a fully occupied 2 story office building in town.  Is anyone seeing this in the residential market?  I would thing the thiefs would be targeting vacant homes as well as commercial buildings.
