We didn't win, but.....

Flag on pole

From one of my previous posts, you can see that my town, Enterprise, Alabama, was in the Top 6 Finalists for Most Patriotic City. We went the extra mile, but didn't make it to #1. To be honest with you, I really don't see that much difference in the way we NORMALLY celebrate The 4th of July and the "Extra's" that we did for the Contest Judges when they came to town. If they counted Year Round Patriotism, I think we would've won, EASILY!!

But Congratulations to the winner, and of course, "wait til NEXT year"!!

What makes a city patriotic?

Flying the flag.

Saying the pledge of allegiance?

Why is one city more patriotic then another?

Hey Travis are you aware my bride is from the Huntsville area?  We head your way yearly to see the family and enjoy the five grand-kids.  Alabama is certainly a beautiful state and produces wonderful people!

Erv,

I guess it's mainly a "feeling" that you get when interacting with the people who live here. When I was stationed at Ft. Rucker, I noticed the difference IMMEDIATELY! Many towns/cities located close to Military Posts/Bases(for the Air Force, etc.), are what I call "Leeches off the Military". You can tell that they are geared toward making as much $$$$ as they can off of the soldiers there, and their families. Yet, in spite of the money they make, they have a disdain for these very same people. They can smile while taking your money, but you can tell what they REALLY feel.

That's why I made the comment about "Year Round Patriotism". You have to be here for more than a quick show-around of the town and some special events put on for the judges. You have to talk to, deal with, work with, and live with the people to get the FULL effect of that "feeling".

I felt it, and stayed!!

John,

Huntsville is at the other end of the state, I'm in L.A. (Lower Alabama). The geography around Huntsville is beautiful since you're at the tip end of the Smokey Mountains. Love the Space Center there, too. And the huge rocket on the Interstate (I always stop and feel like a lil'kid around it - an AMAZING machine!!).

Hi Travis -- sometimes it's just nice to be included in a list of the top six -- as you stated --- there's always next year.
