Americana #10 - A War Didn't Stop This 1822 Bridge - Still Working

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Executives
This 1822 railroad bridge in Nokesville spans what is now the Norfolk and Southern Railway tracks. During the Civil War era it was the Orange and Alexandria Railroad and was coveted by both the Confederate and Union forces. The two battles at Manassas and the later one at Bristoe Station were waged with the Aden Road bridge in the middle of it all.

When the 1863 Bristoe Station battle was over the victorious Union forces had to rebuild the railroad, but I am unaware if that included repairs to the bridge. As you can see, it is alive, well and still actively employed at 190 years of age.

Karen you could say this bridge has stood the test of time. Speaking of bridges the Tapan Zee will have to be replaced.

Hi Karen I love these old Bridges. They were also the inspiration of Erector sets. I build quite a few of them though they never quite looked as good as the originals. :-)

The Norfolk and Southern also goes through Delaware, but I don't think we have any iron bridges as old as your VA bridge. I know the first iron bridge in England dates from the 1780's.

Karen, that is amazing that the same bridge is still in use. Last year, our annual area civil war reenactment reenacted the Battle of Manassas, now when someone mentions the battle, I'm tickled to think that I actually know what they are talking about! :-)

Karen,

Perhaps the bridge was so valuable to ech side that it survived that way. :)
