Friday Insights – How to Change Your Perspectives about Life

This topic alone deserves an entire book to adequately address the complexities of change and the myriad of perspectives that life has to offer each one of us.

Nonetheless, I think if one really wants to change his or her perspectives about life, then either he or she must evaluate his or her beliefs.

Because what we believe and whom we believe in, especially when life’s challenges seem overwhelming, are going to reveal how we respond to change.

From a personal standpoint, I understand the relevance of having your mind renewed in order to see additional perspectives about life.  But when you’re experiencing tremendous pain or perhaps you’ve experienced too many problems for which there appears to be no solvable answers, then it’s easy for your mind to become “stuck” as it pertains to how you view your life.  That’s what happened to me several years ago.

I couldn’t see any other perspectives to make the necessary choices that might provide effective ways to change or living life any better than what I was already trying to do by merely keeping my head above water.

Being “stuck” caused me to remain focused on my own wounds and brokenness, instead of seeking God and surrendering to the possibilities of being transformed.

Yet, once I had reached the end of myself and then gave everything about my life to God, it was from this place where I learned how to accept and then see the meaning behind my painful suffering. I was able to accept the humble state I was in, and from this place, God’s grace enabled me to see the inspiring possibilities of transformational change.

Then the ultimate question from God challenged me about change: “Will you follow me?”

Gordon,

Nice thoughts and commentary...one does not have to underego pain or problems with no solutions to be stuck.  Given all the changes in all our lives, it is easy to be stuck and shut down.  One has to feel the pain of being stuck, I think, before being able to start getting out...A

Gordon,

We have been given the gift of freedom of will, choice and consequences.  Sometimes it takes the experience of being stuck in a situation, lifestyle, self, whatever it is and to be there for a while so we are able to find our way out.  Faith comes in all forms and even people who say they do not believe in some form or another do believe.  I have found this to be truth.  I hear people all of the time say, just get over it.  Well easy to say not so easy to do and it takes a huge leap of faith to turn your face up to God and give it over to Him.  Seldom can we do it alone and if one is fortunate enough to have people who believe in them and are there for support even if it is from afar, the journey seems a little easier.  It is that first step and figuring out how to take it, the next one is easier.  He is always with us even when we think He is not, it is those Little whispers in the ear which come in the form of thought and the small miracles along the way every day that begin to make the next steps easy strides.

Thanks for a nice post.

Gordon,

This reminds me of the 12 steps.......especially the first 3.

1.  We admitted we were powerless over our addiction (or insert your problem here) and that our lives had become unmanageable.

2.  Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3.  Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood God.

The great thing about the 12 steps is that you don't have to be in AA to utilize them.  If you are struggling with anything in life you can look to those steps and if you work on them you will gain clarity.

Alexandra,

Great insights.  Part of this blog post is piggybacking off the topic of chronic pain.  Nonetheless, I couldn't agree with you more... g

Gordon, very powerful words. I am reminded that it is way to easy to get stuck, only with a daily surrender does the mind get renewed. With eyes of faith, I see life in a new and different way. I hope you guys are well.
