National Junk Food Day AND The Anniversary of Hemingway’s Birth. Celebrate the Day!
Ok... if you are on Weight Watchers or seriously trying to “Take It Off in the Rain” scroll down to the 2nd part of this celebration. For the rest of us “junkies”... break out the chips … July 21st is National Junk Food Day!
Now I know we’re supposed to be eating whole grains, organic, colorful, nitrate free, sugar free, preservative free, low sodium “healthy” foods but once in awhile you just have to have something that tastes good!
(Did you know that the average person eats 45 slices of pizza a year?)
I had a good friend who loved junk food.. she would actually buy whipping cream, whip it up and eat it out of the bowl.(The average person eats 25 pounds of candy each year. )
Sometimes you have the kind of day when nothing gives you more comfort than junk food... food with no redeeming value and little if any nutrition. One caveat.....only celebrate this day ONE day out of the year!
The 2nd reason why this day is special is that it is the anniversary of Ernest Hemingway’s birth. He was born in 1899 and is one of my favorite authors.
I hope that Hemingway is required reading in our schools. His books and short stories have always fascinated me …. my favorite book is The Sun Also Rises, favorite short story- The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber. But equally as interesting was Ernest Hemingway’s life.
Born to a physician father and musician mother, Hemingway’s early life was relatively better than normal. He was not only an author but also a journalist, a soldier who received the Italian Silver Medal of Bravery for carrying an Italian soldier to safety, even though he himself was wounded.
And, if you’re down in Key West this weekend and think you’re seeing things, you’re not... it’s the 32nd Annual Hemingway Days and there will be Hemingway look-a-likes wandering around Duval Street.
So, there you are.... a day to indulge your inner Junk Food Addiction while you sit back and read a poem, short story or novel from one of America’s most interesting authors.
What’s Your Favorite Junk Food??
