National Junk Food Day AND The Anniversary of Hemingway’s Birth.  Celebrate the Day!

Ok... if you are on Weight Watchers or seriously trying to “Take It Off in the Rain” scroll down to the 2nd part of  this celebration.   For the rest of us junk food“junkies”... break out the chips … July 21st is National Junk Food Day!

Now I know we’re supposed to be eating whole grains, organic, colorful, nitrate free, sugar free, preservative free, low sodium “healthy” foods but once in awhile you just have to have something that tastes good!

(Did you know that the average person eats 45 slices of pizza a year?)

I had a good friend who loved junk food.. she would actually  buy whipping cream, whip it up and eat it out of the bowl.(The average person eats 25 pounds of candy each year. )

Sometimes you have the kind of day when nothing gives you more comfort than junk food... food with no redeeming value and little if any nutrition.  One caveat.....only celebrate this day ONE day out of the year!

The 2nd reason why this day is special is that it is the anniversary of Ernest Hemingway’s birth.  He was born in 1899 and is one of my favorite authors.

I hope that Hemingway is required reading in our schools.   His books and short stories have always fascinated me …. my favorite book is The Sun Also Rises,  favorite short story- The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber.   But equally as earnest Hemingwayinteresting was Ernest Hemingway’s life.

Born to a physician father and musician mother, Hemingway’s early life was relatively better than normal.   He was not only an author but also a journalist, a soldier who received the Italian Silver Medal of Bravery for carrying an Italian soldier to safety, even though he himself was wounded.

And, if you’re down in Key West this weekend and think you’re seeing things, you’re not... it’s the 32nd Annual Hemingway Days and there will be Hemingway look-a-likes wandering around Duval Street.

So, there you are.... a day to indulge your inner Junk Food Addiction while you sit back and read a poem, short story or novel from one of America’s most interesting authors.

What’s Your Favorite Junk Food??

Dill Pickle chips!  Can't have just one.  I've visited Key West a couple of times while on cruises, beautiful place.  Would love to be there during this celebration.  Also would like to be there in the evening.  I hear it's a lively place at night.

Sharon- have you ever tried the dark chocolate chips??  Excellent.

Kristin- I think if you get a late start to the celebration you can carry it over to the next day.

Scott- Ice cream is a dairy product so you certainly can have it for breakfast!  Think of it as replacing a glass of milk!

Patricia- oh yes... the good ole days of college when you could eat junk food and no one said a thing.  So many pizzas and hamburgers... yum.

Kathy- omg.. that's what my husband likes!!  The next time you're in Key West be sure to go to Mallory Square at sunset for the sunset tradition.

Kathy S- you probably did.  Again, try the Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber.

Alexandra-One of my faves is chocolate covered popcorn.  Haven't had it in a long time.

Kathy -- I think that pizza consumption number is a bit low --- could there possibly be those out there who eat less 45 pieces in a year???   Yikes, that is a lot of pizza!

I'm generally a pretty healthy eater....I do better than most.  Today we celebrate Jack's 3rd birthday so it will be dogs and burgers and birthday cake with ice cream on the menu!  I'm looking forward to every bite!

I Like National Junk Food Day!  Once in a blue moon I do love my junk food, but can't take too much of it.  Love to eat "real" food.

I can't remember the last time I had junk food.......when I want to be bad, I have a handful of nuts and dried fruit that I keep in a container for snacks.

BARFF- it's the beard.

Michael- that would be almost a pizza a week, which if you're in college might be low!

Sharon- tell me you made the cake and it was cute!!! Post a pic.

Jennifer- don't eat what I used to re: junk food!  But I do love it.

BarbaraJo- oh, you're making me look bad!

Ron- now that's funny!!!  I should have had ice cream today... sigh.

Kathy, speaking of Hemmingway, I recently read The Paris Wife, a historic novel about his first marriage.  It was a great read, especially if you are a fan.

This is new one on me, who knew. On a rare occasion I will eat something, I really know, I shouldn't. I guess, it's my way of being bad.

Kathy, junk food is self-nurturing and there is nothing wrong with spoiling ourselves a little every now and then. For me it's Mac fries

Hi Kathy, I had no idea that junk food had its own national day. They should have chosen the leap year Feb 29 for it ~ only once in 4 years! lol

Funny you should ask about the cake.  No I didn't make it, but the cake will be the star of WW this week.

Kathy:

I came over from Patricia's blog.  My favorite snacks are potato chips.  I love them, I think about them and I try not to eat them too often.  Takes real will power.
