You're Walking on Fire?

by Michelle Carr Crowe, Cupertino real estate agent

"You're Walking on Fire?" was the incredulous response from my daughter when I told her I planned to Fire Walk as part of the Tony Robbins "Unleash the Power Within" Workshop in San Jose, Calif. on July 19-22, 2012.

She and I have successfully broken boards together with our bare hands before as part of The Home Church's Self-Defense class, so we both know in our souls the self-confidence a life-changing power moment provides.

Part of her disbelief was due to my extreme foot pain issues-I suffer from plantar fasciitis, fibromyalgia and neuropathy. I always must wear specific shoes for support, and tend to be the slowest walker in the family due to foot pain.

After the 11 hours of training/brainwashing (no breaks in a program that long is equal to brainwashing in my book), and visualization exercises those participating were directed to walk a couple of blocks to where the "fire lanes" awaited us.

Strangely, to me, Mr. Robbins joked with us about "burning leg stumps," told a detailed horror story of the time he was burned by coals stuck to his feet after his 24th firewalk, and then admitted the last time he did this 14 people were burned and 3 died--then said, "I'm just f---ing with you, nobody got hurt."

I found it odd and off-putting to give us images of burns and death just before embarking on an event like this. I've attended many workshops and seminars by top leaders and trainers.

Perhaps there was some sophisticated neurolinguistics programming going on there but it didn't feel that way. I felt like he was maybe trying to scare people away so fewer would do the firewalk. Maybe Satan was at work trying to work a curse in here.

When we left the San Jose Convention Center, the pounding of the drums beckoned us towards our destiny. We chanted, "Yes! Yes! Yes!" as we walked. Once we arrived we were instructed to take off our shoes, and darn it, we were waiting in a big giant mass again, just like the 90 minute wait to "check-in" that morning.

Before the firewalk, they randomly assigned us new partners, and I'd gotten separated from my person (we didn't exactly exchange phone numbers). I spent a lot of time searching for her, but finally decided I'd just better "just do it."

Walking on aggregate or any textured surface is extremely painful for me-it feels as if I am walking on giant rocks and needles. So the walking and waiting for 45 minutes was excruciatingly painful.

Then just 5 people before my turn,  my fire lane apparently wasn't hot enough-they poured a wheelbarrow full of fresh hot new coals on my lane-aack!

I confess I praised God and prayed a lot before firewalking, in addition to using the techniques taught us by Tony Robbins. My special power trigger was envisioning when I broke boards before with my bare hands. Amazingly, when it was my turn I easily and happily firewalked! Hallelujah! Yes! Yes! Yes!

Yes! I Walked on Fire! It was an empowering birthday present to myself.

Now if I can walk on fire, I can do anything!

Sadly I learned later today that apparently 21 people were treated for burns and 3 were hospitalized during the firewalk. I hope and pray all are healed, whole and well soon.

Aloha & God bless you,

Michelle

Oohhhh!

How brave of you. Glad you had the exhilaration of walking on fire. Would you do it again?

Awesome, Michelle! You should be so proud of yourself. I know a number of people who went to this and will have to follow up with this. It's all a mind game. More power to you :)

Thanks Pacita. I would do it again but now that I've done it once, I'm not sure I'd need to do it again.

Lisa, thank you. I was surprised to hear 21 people were treated for burns, and 3 were hospitalized at the event.
