Chocolopolis, Seattle.

I was making calls Friday with my coworker and friend Barbie Van Horn. Our greatest challenge this day was getting in and out of appointments without getting drenched. Our Northwest weather pendulum this mid July day decided to sway way to the other side and it was chilly and raining cats and dogs.

I was looking forward to our last appointment because we were going to meet our new friend, David Wilson, on Queen Anne Hill at Chocolopolis. I’ve never been there but I’ve certainly heard a lot about it. Barbie is a chocolate aficionado. Actually it goes way beyond that, she has an absolutely amazing passion for chocolate and beware, it’s contagious!

David and I enjoyed a wonderful tour and got a real education from bean to bar about Cacao. Where it’s grown, the processes to make it, and the many different traditions for creating those delectable wonderful treats we all enjoy.

If there was ever a place to do this, it was here at Chocolopolis Seattle. It’s like the Smithsonian Institute of Cacao. They have a mind boggling array of gourmet chocolates with over 200 different bars from 20 different countries around the world.

Chocolopolis is all about Artisan Chocolate and they have very strict guidelines that must be adhered to or they won’t sell it. I love this quote from their website. “Once a chocolate meets these criteria, we then evaluate it based on taste. If we don’t like the taste, we don’t carry the bar.”

I found it engaging that with so many varieties the shop is organized by geography. It was fun working our way around the store country by country with our own private guide. I learned so much about cacao that I would never have imagined before.

One of my first after thoughts was, “this needs to be a clock hour class!” Hey, I’m in marketing, sales, and new media... and I have 3 clock hour credits in chocolate! What real estate broker wouldn’t want these credentials! I can’t think of anyone who wouldn't, can you?

As I mentioned it was a very cool rainy day in Seattle so we unanimously opted for a hot chocolate. I had the Santander (Colombia) 70% made with whole milk with a hint of orange in it. OMG! When you’re in Seattle, it’s definitely worth the trip to Chocolopolis on Queen Anne Hill.

I threw this little slide show together to give you a better idea of my cacao experience. I love the packaging too, it’s an art medium all unto itself. Enjoy!

Check out Chocolopolis.

Rene, let me first say that I am glad you are back posting...and I enjoy your posts enormously.  I will have to order some of these bars for my wife who also is a chocophile.  Thanks for a very informative and likely butt-saving post!

This was an experiment trying to get more mobile and trying to get it from camera to published faster. I usually use Corel Video Studio. I gave myself 60 minutes to do this (and I failed) cuz I'm obsessive compulsive and had to go back and tweak things (over and over). Yet, I learned a lot. I used my iPhone 4s for the photos, added an old recording (that was sitting on my hard drive) and used Picasa for the first time to create the video.

Not exactly intuitive, but it didn't take me too long to figure out Picasa videos editing (without reading any directions). But, what I have didn't quite render to the YouTube video you are seeing, especially the intro and exit credits. I rendered it about 6 times and everyone came out a little different.

My intention wasn't to create a masterpiece, yet I want what I want when I want it, and I expect it to be what I intended... So, Google gets a B on this one.

When you see us up there next, whatever you do, please do not tell my wife about this place. I would be bankrupt by the time we left the store with my 3 ladies who all love their chocolate.

Todd: Okay, but only because you're my friend! :O)

Charles: And you don't need reservations!

Debbie: It was a real treat and the place did smell awesome! Hard to explain, but the whole ambience of the place is wonderful. I love they way they use glass for displaying.

Thanks Rene!

I always love introducing people to fine chocolate and the rain that day made a cup of hot drinking chocolate so enticing!  We'll have to go back and try a cup of iced sipping chocolate on a hot and sunny day.

I see all of the comments from your friends around the country -let them know I am always available for a few minutes to meet people and talk about chocolate, and introduce them to the best chocolate spots in Seattle if they happen to be visiting.

P.S.  I'm going to have to give Picassa Video a try, I haven't used that one yet.   I usually don't do much or any editing on my video because I am far too impatient.

I could do mortal damage to my body in a place like that, Rene'. . .That cup of hot chocolate looks awesome, even on a day like today, which has had temps reach near 100.

Myrl: "They say there's nothing like a great hot drink on a hot day to ultimately cool you off." Yet, I admit it almost (and I mean that tongue in cheek) wish for those cold winter days just so I had an excuse to indulge. I'll try not to go there though and enjoy. Next time it's a bar, cuz I'm sure I'll be back before winter!
