Tight Staging Budget Means Repurposing Your Furniture
Selling your house? On a tight budget? A professional Home Stager can help! Staging includes establishing good traffic flow, function for each space, and demonstrating the house's square footage. Creatively re-purposing furniture can help with these issues. And the furniture is free!
What does "re-purposing furniture" mean?
When I am working with a seller's furnishings as I am Staging their home for sale, I may suggest using pieces in a new or different way. There may be different reasons for this:
- Some older pieces just don't work for today's young families.
- An over-sized coffee table may need to be replaced.
- We may need to suggest a function for under-utilized spaces, using things at hand.
That's when we have to get creative!
For example, if they are removing the bulky armoire and boxy TV it contained, I may suggest they use a small server or sofa table to hold the new flat screen.
Here are some other examples:
- Antique Hoosier cabinet moved out from the kitchen, now used as a fun wine bar
- Woven rattan three-panel screen becomes a dramatic headboard in the Master Bedroom
- Built-in cabinets with shelving above converted to a functional work space by removing the lower cabinet doors
- Small writing table used as a vanity
- Ottoman or trunk used as a coffee table
Here's an example of a bookcase used as a console to create an entry area in a living room:
Before: This tall Parsons-style bookcase is modular (Ikea?), and had no special detailing that read "top" or "bottom".
The sellers followed my instructions, laid out in a DIY plan from my Staging Consultation. We needed to create an more formalized entry area in the living room. I suggested laying the bookcase on its side; it was the perfect size for a console - a place for a lamp, keys, mail, etc.
After: They did just as I recommended! They kept the storage afforded by the bookcase, but increased its functionality.
This example is from a lovely cottage in the Milford, CT beach area. Nestings Home Staging & Design provided a Staging Consultation; the sellers did the rest.
