Can't take your own listing photo in Alameda CA? Hire a photographer!

If you can’t take a picture of your listing in Alameda CA, hire a photographer

But don’t copy someone else’s.

An out-of-city agent listed a beach front condo in Alameda CA. Good for her.
She had it staged. Good for the owner.
And she posted several photos. Another good move.

Except....

That agent found a beach photo she liked but didn’t take, and used it as the primary photo of her listing.Clear day in Alameda CA

Bad move.

Because a local agent, moi, took that picture.
I keep up with local listings and saw this listing that used MY photo. As a matter of fact, if someone finds this photo among the Alameda CA beach images, the photo is tagged on my blog.

Although it’s flattering that the other agent liked it enough to use it, nonetheless in our local MLS, it’s a violation to use another agent’s photo without permission.

Goodness...one would think that for a $395,000 listing, the agent can afford to hire a photographer! It’s a disservice to the seller not to. And shows a lack of respect. Simply put, it's a lapse in moral and ethical judgment to pass off someone else’s photo as hers.

Watermark your photos

We’ve been advised to put a watermark on our photos as one way to stop this nonsense.  But some folks can save the photo and crop the watermark, too.  As such, for our MLS purposes, the way to stop this nonsense is to click on the “correction” icon to report this violation.

But why do we have to? Can’t agents just do the right thing and take their own photos? And if they can’t, then for goodness sake, hire a professional photographer!

Doggone it, that makes me so mad!  I've had local agents steal my photos...some with up to 5 neighborhood photos on their MLS listing (I always take photos of the neighborhood amenities, schools, etc.)  They always feign ignorance when I contact them.  Irritates the heck out of me because I spend a lot of time taking those photos and they're MINE!

Well said Pacita.   And why would the agent make that the primary photo anyway?

This has a funny twist but the truth is in there!  How funny to use someone else's photos of the listing you are responsible for.

Right on Picita. I hope that you did turn her in and she has to pay a fine. Real estate agents make good money and can be so cheap sometimes. That is not being respectful of your client.

Melissa --- like you, I also take many pictures to show neighborhoods I serve. So it's hard to understand why some agents won't make the effort.

Jim --- the agent wanted to show a photo of the beach with views of San Francisco. She could have very easily taken the same photo, but probably didn' even make the attempt since it was easier to copy/steal someone else's.

Rosemary -- the least she could have done is see whose photo it was. I'm certainly easy enough to find. She could have asked me (but I still wouldn't have said no).

Steve --- yes,  I did report it to the MLS. She may or may not get a fine -- but I simply wanted her NOT to use my photo for her listing, especially since I have a beachfront condo coming up in two weeks, just a few blocks away.
