Week of October 1, 2007  "Disney Costs too much"

How many times have you heard someone say that to you?  I always get that from my friends who want to go to WDW but use that comment as an excuse to skip vacation there.  Sure Disney is expensive but let me put things into perspective for a minute.

This weekend I took my wife and two daughters to Chicago for the day.  We went to Navy Pier (http://www.navypier.com/) which is located on Lake Michigan in downtown Chicago.  Navy Pier has a ton of fun things for a family to do, but we went there for their Childrens Museum.  It ranks as one of the top museums for children in the midwest and our daughers loved it the last time we were there. 

Disney has just released its new parking fees ($11 a car) and people were upset.  Well when I pulled out the ticket to park at Navy Pier, it was a $23 charge no matter how long you stayed!  I thought, "man Disney isn't too bad".  We then walked around toward the Children's Musuem.  There are all sorts of shops and kiosks selling about everything you could ever want, even the roasted almonds that are found at Epcot.  We bought four tickets to the Museum for a total of $32.  Now that is not bad at all.  One thing of interest in the Museum was a new Curious George exhibit.  Curious George made and apperance as well.  My youngest daughter asked if she could get her picture with him.  We walked over and there were litereally 25 kids and parents swarming George.  There was a "handler" with George, but really just chaos.  No line or anything.  Just kids grabbing him and parents snapping pictures like mad.  My youngest said, "let's leave, at least at Disney there is a line", so we went on our way.  So something as simple as a character greeting, Disney knows how to make it special.

We ate lunch at the "food court"- think Pop Century.  We ordered two kids' pastas, two individual small pizzas, and 3 waters.  Our total was............................$28.50!   And to make matters worse I couldnt use my Disney Dining Experience Card either.  So Disney was cheaper for us when we eat counter service or in a "food Court" type setting.

The last part that blew us away and made us realize that Disney isn't as expensive as you think, were the "rides" that Navy Pier has.  They have a Ferris Wheel, Carousel, a swing type ride where you sit in a seat, and it flings you way out and around-most fairs have something similar, and a "frog hopper" ride for little ones.  Each ride was.........$5!!!!!  yes $5 for the carousel, or frog hopper.  My wife looked at me and said, "and people think Disney is expensive."  She was right, Navy Pier turned out to be pretty costly, considering we hadn't been there in a few years.

The bottom line is that for anyone who thinks Disney is expensive, they really need to look and see what you get for your money.  Sure $75 for a one day ticket is very expensive, I agree.  But with free transportation, the best entertainment in the world for a family, and the ability to watch as many shows, or do as many rides as you can all day, nothing beats Walt Disney World.  Maybe that is why those of us who "get it", continue to come back year after year, to the "Happiest place on Earth."
