St. Joseph Statue helps to Sell Your Home…

Fact or Fiction?

Fact or Folklore/ St Joseph StauteThere is a belief amongst real estate agents and homeowners that if you buy a St. Joseph statue and bury it in the yard, that the home will sell faster.

I did a little research on this and found that this belief has been around for hundreds of years. The Good Saint Joseph was chosen as the Patron Saint of Home and Family by the Catholic Church. The tradition can be traced back hundreds of years to Theresa of Avila, who prayed to St. Joseph for more land for Christian Converts, and encouraged Nuns to bury St Joseph Medals in the ground as a symbol of their devotion.

This belief is still seen today and the internet sells kits for agents/homeowners to buy and bring good luck to their home. These kits sell for approx. $7.95-$12.95 (includes the statue, burial bag, prayer card) and one site even offers a free on-line listing though I am not sure where this on-line site is.

Fact or Folklore/ St Joseph StauteI will confess that back in 2009, I was having a real hard time getting an offer on an average home with a high price tag plus I had a stubborn seller who refused to reduce the price. I secretly bought a statue at the local Catholic store and buried the statue in the yard during an open house. No one knew but I felt if it works, great and if it doesn’t I am only out a few dollars. Within a week, we had 3 offers. Do I think the statue had anything to do with it? Not sure but still I sold the home and it had been on the market for 9 months with no offers. The market was changing and I never felt the need to do this since.

Fact or Folklore/ St Joseph Staute Sold Home

If you have bought a Saint Joseph statue, please comment below and tell me whether you think it worked or not? Details are greatly appreciated too. Do you think this is folklore? If you tried this and it didn't work, please share this info with us too!

Kristin, I have heard of the tradition as well, personally I have never used it on any my listings and neither has the homeowner.  I do believe that if it is used and you believe it will then it will, it is the power of positive thinking. And as you said in your post, if it doesn't then you are only out a few dollars.  ~Karen

I had a client a few years ago that was Jewish.  She asked me to buy it and help her say the prayer.  We buried him upside down facing away from the house in the front yard.  That was the rule.  We got an offer and sold it right after.  Listen it can't hurt.

I personally don't believe in it but have heard it many times.  I think it is about good pricing and aggressive marketing.

I've never done it myself, but whatever works is good with me! I agree with Karen, it's the positive thinking that brings on more positivity.

Hi Karen,

I agree, power of the mind is a strong tool but still not sure how it works? I read a book once, Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale. He wrote that book in the 50's or early 60's so all of his ideas were new at the time. Now we  have lots of believers and I too believe in positive thinking and in prayer.  Peale said Anybody can do just about anything with himself that he really wants to and makes up his mind to do. We are all capable of greater things than we realize.

Of course I have had trouble selling a few homes in my career and did try the St Joseph statue once. .

Hi John,

Sometimes people just don't like a particular home for whatever reason either inside or out. But if you do not have a seller to help you by reducing the price, sometimes you will try anything and so I did and I ended up selling it but it was a difficult transaction. The seller had never been in real estate and told me after we accepted the offer and everything was signed, that he wanted us to use a particular escrow and title company 60 miles away that no one had heard of. The other agent and I had agreed to First AM and it was in the contract....or we would have had a problem with that too. I never knew why he wanted that company but had to just say NO!

Kristin, I have never done it neither but I think it can change your mindset. I say whatever works and makes seller feel good. I wonder though how many people have had no luck with this.

Hi Silvia,

I was hoping to get some comments from agents who had tried and had no luck so maybe I will amend the post and ask for those comments also. Have a great week.

Hi Kwee,

It is hard for me to believe that a statue could make offers come in. Perhaps it was just something the listing agent said that made the difference and made a buyer decide. I am not sure but I do believe in positive thinking.
