Referral Key? Not me. I'll stick with Active Rain.

Have you noticed an increase of invitations from Referral Key? I've been getting more and more and since the invite looks and reads rather spammy [Are You Taking On New Clients?], I just deleted them without further investigating. But they keep coming, mostly from people I don't really know, so I decided to find out what's up with that.

I didn't have to spend waste a lot of time researching, thanks to a couple of very entertaining and enlightening blogs by Claire Diaz-Ortiz. Thanks to Claire - No, really, Thank You Claire - I am pretty sure that Referral Key is not for me!

Supposedly it "works" like this: you are invited to set up yet another profile to create yet another circle of friends business partners on yet another platform to whom you want to send referrals to or receive referrals from. I love referrals, of course, I am a Realtor
® - so why would I choose to decline joining yet another network?

Well, referrals via Referral Key are encouraged by offering something of value - you send me a referral and I'll send you a box of steaks kinda thing. I don't care much for steaks - I am a vegetarian - but that's not the only issue I have with Referral Key. In our industry it is a violation to pay anyone but the broker a referral fee. I cannot - nor would I want to - send anyone a month supply of steaks in exchange for sending me a referral.

I suppose my broker could opt in and offer a steak to a referring broker. That broker can then take his 25 or 50% and give the rest to the agent or perhaps they could enjoy dinner together. At least it would make for a nice little bonding experience. Title Attorneys, lenders and inspectors couldn't even get a taste, I'm sorry to say, since kickbacks happen to be illegal.

There also is an option to not offer anything (I think) but it seems that that would take away the whole "otherness" of yet another network. So what would be a good reason to join then? I don't know. What I do know is that I do not want to compete for half a steak or round of golf or year's-supply-of-whatever ... It's a scary thought really that anyone would send a referral because of that!

Soooo ... Referral Key? Not me. I'll stick with my network and Active Rain.

I know those people. Whatever I don't know but should I can find out by reading their blogs, looking at their profile and picking up the phone. That is a true referral network.

Referrals are an integral part of my business - I want to make sure I only refer to the best based on their expertise, knowledge and personality and not because they are offering me (half) a steak.

Andrea,  Thanks for the heads up.  I have not heard of this one yet either, but it will probably hit my inbox tomorrow :-)

Hi Elyse, you are very welcome :-) Thanks to above mentioned Claire who did the research.. I just had to verify!

Hi Tammy, supposedly this company has been around for 4 years or so but I've just recently been getting the invites. There's an unsubscribe but I'm not sure if that's from the whole "network" or just the person who send me the invite!

Referral Key hasn't emailed or called us yet either, but this has been helpful information to know what to expect when they do.

I agree with Laura  (#9); glad you took the time to research them. I don't think I've received any emails from them, either, but then again, with the amount of Spam we get, they could have gotten into my Inbox and deleted just as quickly.

There's a wide array of people trying to get into your pocket, Andrea.  Some are straight-out scams, and some are a little more subtle.  I think you made a great choice.  I'm a firm believer in avoiding "pay to play" companies .  Too many companies exist solely to glean money from agents.  No thanks.

I do all my referring to agents first of all on Activerain and then if I cannot find a good agent then by other means but I usually find what I need right here.

Hi Eileen, I got invites from people I barely know - blows my mind that some of them are actually in the Real Estate industry.

Hi Gina, thank you!

Hi Laura, Claire did most of the work :-) I was happy to share. Now you know to just hit the unsubscribe button.

Hi Peggy, I didn't pay much attention the first couple times and just dismissed it as spam. But when they kept coming from someone I recognized I had to find out what it's all about.

Hi Mike, I'm really wondering how this company is making money.. perhaps by getting a share if steak, golf or whatever is purchased for a referral? Nope, don't need to be part of it.

Hi Mike, that's the great thing about AR - great people all over the country! There's no need to go anywhere else ...

There's just way too many solicitations these days.  More and more, so if it's not someone trying to sell you a zip code then it's the next great referral source.

Hi Andrea,

Thanks for sharing this entertaining blog.

Wow, I would have never thought about steak for a referral.

I wonder how profitable is this referral for steak business J

It is frustrating to deal with the solicitations. Must be a number of agents shelling out the dough to keep all those companies in business. The best tip I have is when an suspicous number calls I answer with my company name "Thanks for calling XXX how may I direct your call?" They either anounce themselves or hang up. (Hehehe)

Hi Carla, yes there are ... I just had a voicemail the other day from a local TV station looking for a "featured" agent, at a price of course.

Hi Wandanna, glad you found it entertaining! It would never have crossed my mind - I'm wondering how much of the profit Referral Key is getting?

Hi Sherry, that's a good one, I have to remember that! I'm hesitant to answer "unknown caller", it's seldom anything good.

I have not heard of this company, but I do agree with you...I prefer to give (and get) referrals for people I know and trust - those that will take great care of my customers.  I think that's the best way to treat your customers, therefore, it's the best way to do business.

Hi Christine, I just recently started getting a few invites but have put a stop to it quickly. The Rain is fun and legal :-)

Hi Phil, I know, right? Mine, too - sometimes it just takes one click!

Hi Debbie, it's a scary thought to me that someone would make referrals based on the type of reward offered - 'I don't like steak sooo I'm going to send it the agent offering a round of golf'.
