Minor League Baseball's Most Valuable Team?

The Sacramento River Cats!

If you are familiar with minor league baseball in Sacramento, you surely have heard of the Sacramento River Cats. The Sacramento River Cats were the Pacific Coast League Champions in 2011, and hope to make a run for the title again this year.

Sacramento River Cats Ranked Most Valuable Team

Forbes magazine recently rated the River Cats as the most valuable minor league team. Now we aren’t talking about the big numbers that the Major League Teams are estimated as being worth, but they do have value.

Here are some of the facts about the Sacramento Team:

  • Team Value: $32 Million
  • Revenue: $20 Million
  • Operating Income: $9.7 Million
  • Raley Field Stadium Cost: $30 Million

Ironically, the River Cats are an Major League Baseball Affiliate of the Oakland Athletics; Major League Baseball’s Least Valuable Team. That's right, the least valuable team, 30th place out of 30 teams! The value of these two teams cannot be compared because the teams operate in such different environments.

The value of a minor league team has to do with local ticket sales, promotions, and team success. Costs of players, construction and operations are much less than the Big Leagues. The major league teams have very high player costs, generate huge television revenues, and deal with local municipalities with construction projects. The two teams cannot be compared to each other.

So if you are interested in going to baseball game in Sacramento, see the River Cats play at Raley Field. You won’t be familiar with the players on the field but there are some other things about the game. The food is unbelievable at this ballpark, it’s not your “old school” menu. There are always fun promotional games and events that will add to the experience too. And it is all right here in Sacramento, California.

The Sacramento River Cats are currently in first place in their Division of the Pacific Coast League.

Good morning Tom

What a huge deal that Forbes magazine recognized the Sacramento River Cats!  I'm sure all the ball fans are excited as they should be!  Our local Isotopes are doing well this year and it's a welcome sight to see so much green that the field offers.

It was great to hear about the success of the Sacramento River Cats John.

How do the ballparks get the grass to be so green anyway?

Good morning Tom. I love minor league baseball. Something about the crowds, the enthusiasm, and the real world feeling. It's special.

I feel a lot closer to the game when I'm at a Minor League game Sheila, and it doesn't cost an arm and leg either!

Its real interesting that the least valuable team in the big leagues would have the most valuable frnachise in the minors.  Sacramento is a great town though.

Maybe the Oakland Athletics can recruit the Sacramento River Cats administration and sign then to contracts to run the Major League business Chuck.

Minor League Baseball is a lot of fun, you get the first glimpse of the next generation of stars before they get called up to the big show. I recently went to a Seattle Mariner affiliate Everett Aquasox game and it was an awesome community atmosphere they do a great job of getting the fans involved. (Not to mention cheap beer!)

Enjoyed the post, have a good one Tom.

There is something special about watching a minor league game that you just don't get at the major league level Eric. Whether it's in Everett, Sacramento, or anywhere else; it is good fun if you are a fan.

I didn't evaluate the teams janeAnne, I'm passing the buck to Forbes Magazine here,   :)

I am certain that the Asheville team is a great local team on that other coast.

Great local post Tom!  We had season tickets the first year the River Cat field was open.  My husband and myself worked the consession stand a couple games as a fundraiser for my son's traveling baseball team one year.  My niece worked for them her first year out of college. And we can see the fireworks they shoot off at home games from our house.  Love Rivercats!

Go River Cats!! Easily the best value for an outstanding family outing anywhere near Sacramento.  They make the experience so enjoyable that the winning is bonus.  We don't need to dump a bunch of public money dow the basketball-rabbit hole!

I thought it was funny that when the Sacramento Kings deal fell through, they wanted to bring MLB team to town. Sounds great, where are we going to put them?

The River Cats are the best deal in town Dan!
