In the late 19th century the barbershop was a community center where men discussed issues of the day. In African American shops the men would also harmonize while waiting for their turn giving birth to barbershop harmony.
The genre features a cappella close harmony, songs with lyrics that can be understood and overtones.
Barbershop choruses and quartets were popular until 1919, but declined with the birth of the Jazz Era. Interest was rekindled in the 1940's and remains strong today
Locally, the Bull Run Troubadours was formed in 1957 and has more than 30 members. Similar to other barbershop harmony choruses they have numerous "breakout" quartets. We made the video below last summer while attending their performance at Harris Pavilion in Manassas. Although the full chorus was unable to be present, I am sure you will agree that barbershop harmony is in good voice in Prince William County.
