107 Comments on Ten Reasons Why Every Social Media Manager Should be Over 30
Bob, Great post, we all enjoyed it. Age is just a number. I have met a few people who really were old a t 30 or 40 ans some of us are not yet getting old at 60.
I have noticed many young people are low on energy and have many medical problems because of their poor diet. Neither I or my wife have ever had any reason to visit a doctor. I was reading that some experts are predicting that some of us oldies will outlive our children.
This "over 40 year old" has the advantage of having children who can show me how to use the latest technology. My favorite line at our house is "I didn't know I could do that . . . ". I agree with you Bob: The social media manager SHOULD be over 30.
Bob,
Well done! There's a lot of truth to the with age comes WISDOM. While the internet, social media calls for a balancing act of this wisdom and the knowledge of how to interact with all ages.
So far, we've been very evil parents not getting an XBOX til our oldest was 16. Thank goodness, all three of our kids actually know how to have a conversation.
All the best, Michelle
I concur that at 25 you really don't have much of a clue about the real world and haven't had the life experiences you need to be an "expert" at anything. I know that I didn't. I like the bit about the last minute concerts...can' go hangout til 2 or 3 am anymore at the drop of a hat. Hurts too much the next day!
Did she steal this from the Toyota commercial or what?!! You know, the "fake puppy" line. I am over 40 and definitely agree about social media managers needing to be under 40.
My son-in-law worked at CompuServe!
There's a saying that goes, all publicity is good, negative publicity is even better. Remember Ann Coulter? She got her 15 minutes and more. People would spend hours researching rebuttals to what was the latest misinformation that she spewed forth in the media. It worked too! She got all the attention! Wore the same style little black dress in all the TV interviews - and looked really good doing it!
Bob - Great post! It's hard to believe you're considered old at 35!
Ummmm, like, Bob, as a 46-year-old social media manager, I think this is really funny! :-)
I absolutely LOVED this article! But, seeing as I'm only 28 I suppose I should let my clients know I'm not best suited for the job I've been doing for the last several years. You know, since I'm two years shy of the older than 30, younger than 40 rule. Great post, this is definitely my favorite in response to Cathryn's.
A funny post. I was the new tech guy when I got into the business back in 1980 and had a computer on my desk. Now as an over 60, I long for the days with a little less tech and when I could pick up the phone and have an actual conversation.
Great post, unfortunately most won't listen. I've had the same discussion with my kids, social media and that dam text messaging during work hours.
Appears the only way to learn is get fired from a good job and then see how hard it is to rebuild your reputation. Once you post it, it's for the world to see.
Bob I think my 25 years of work in other fields helps me be a better agent. I see beyond the close and the other aspects around it. I heard it said (and maybe it was you) that young people are not experts with technology. They know how to play with it; but they do not know what makes it work.
I hadnt read the other post, but now Im going to have to read it based on your post. Great stuff... just wait until you are 40 and have a better list. :-)
Where is the original poster's rebuttal or follow up post? It is very important to own up what you did or wrote in the real world, but in the 'young' social media world, probably not so much. As Phil mentioned, her editor defended her online, is the editor over 25 and an adult?
I just loved it!!! Great piece!!!
Bob, it takes time to acquire wisdom, though not all people acquire wisdom over time.
Excellent response to her article! I'm over 30 and I was laughing the whole time I was reading your article.
My son will be obtaining an iPad this Christmas to conitnue his computer knowledge.
Hi Bob-
This post has so much about which to think. I know some truly brilliant, innovative and responsible people under 35. I admire them and love hearing their ideas and learning about what they think and do. I look forward to knowing them as they become older and even more interesting. Some are into social media and some are not. It isn't a given because of their age group.
If there is not a richness of experiences, social maturity, and perspective that we gain as we get older; then individuals would be in suspended animation (ok, so we all know some who are...), and the business world would be in even more trouble. Scary thought!

I don't think there's necessarily an age that corresponds to this, but I do see the point. What your social media manager needs is experience and accountabilty. It's found more with older people, but there are also plenty of young people who can fill that role.
Interesting post!
