It’s not cheap to move!

Recently I posted helpful tips to relieve stress moving into to your new home, it’s true moving can be very demanding and stressful, but it can also be very expensive, know how much you’ll need to pay for professional movers, you need to be prepared, and budget accordingly before you move, make sure you understand the cost associated with moving.

Approximately 20 million (give or take a million) American households box it up and move yearly. It’s been reported the average move cost the American house around $12,000 dollars. If you need the service of professional movers it will depend on some prime factors: Distance/Weight/ Nature.

It’s not cheap to move!

Moving to another state means you need to pay attention to the movers charges as it relates to weight and distance; the weight of the load on the truck, and the distance becomes huge cost factors. Professional movers need to provide the weight of the empty truck by way of receipt or certification. It’s always a good idea to ask some big national reputable moving companies over the phone and see if they can provide rough estimates. If you can provide a little information like, 3 bedroom home, kitchen, family-room, living-room, etc. the moving company should be able to give you a rough estimate.

Add-on charges can really eat away at your budget,  make sure the company is not going to bill you for little charges or will have add on charges, you don’t want any surprises ruining your move.  Big moves don’t have to be a big headache; they just need a good plan.  It’s not cheap to move!

Think about what’s right and then do it; I ays say; “It’s harder to do the wrong thing verses doing the right thing”

I'm moving tomorrow. One block okay maybe a 1.5 blocks.  Fortunately the cost of the move isn't all that high but it's still stressful getting everything organized.

There are many costs related to moving. One needs to play devil's advocate and make a list of "what ifs" and research the related costs.

I heard that if there is a dispute during the time they have your "goodies", they are held ransom until settled...What then? Only deal with well known insured businesses and read that small print...good post here

Very informative post.  When I was a kid, we moved across the country.  I can't imagine how expensive that was.  Good topic and congrats on the feature.

I am a landlord and one of my retention tools is to send tenants at renewal time a list of costs associated with movng.  Often staying with a rent increase is more expensive than moving.

Hi Jon, nice post. I didn't realize 20 million people move yearly... that's a heck of a lot of people.

Moving is a pain--and expensive.  I also think as the years go by, and all the stuff we accumulate, the older we get, the more expensive the move.  Yes, a lot of people move every year, which is good for our business, but a pain for those being transferred.

Hiring a moving company can be really scary.  We were subject to that scam when they don't unload everything unless you give them more money.  The 20/20, Nightline, 60 Minutes people do a good job in trying to unravel the scams but there are way too many.

Hi Jon, Congrats on the featured post. Moving can be the most difficult challenge in any home sale but with a good real estate service, a well counseled client gets the benfit of experience and knowledge and while it is still a demanding chore, it can be much less stressful with a good proven plan to accomplish it.

Jon:

Moving across country is an expensive journey.  Your advice may help people make the move as inexpensive as possible.  There are so many places where you can be taken advantage of if you don't do you homework and investigate everything.

Hello Jon,

Congratulations on your post being featured. It seems that years ago many people did not realize that it can definitely hurt financially to relocate from one location to another. More and more I am finding that people are paying more attention to overall cost these days. True I suppose one could make the case that it was somewhat cheaper years ago, however - costs can still add up if not properly prepared. Great post and truly great information.
