The Robinson Nature Center in Columbia, a hands-on learning experience for kids - and mom & dad, too!

The Robinson Nature Center in Columbia is a nature wonderland for kids - hands on exploring is strongly encouraged. The exhibits are beautifully done and keep little ones interested through lots of color, buttons, wheels, sounds and lights. The upper level focuses on the seasons and the lower on wildlife during the day and night.

The Robinson Nature Center, Columbia, MDThe building itself was built with green technologies in mind and emphasizes sustainable design features: a green roof, solar panels, geothermal heating and cooling, low VOC paints, recycled building materials and water conservation. Lots of windows highlight the very 'thing' the center is all about. Behind-the-scenes tours are offered but must be scheduled in advance.

At the Robinson Nature Center children are invited to explore: they can set a mill in motion, fly a helicopter along the Eastern Shore, discover animals native to the area, learn to distinguish night critters by the sounds they make, find out why a dead tree is not really dead, see a beaver dam up close, recognize invasive plants, count the butterflies in the garden, go on a hike, gaze at the stars ... and so much more!

There are also a number of classrooms at the Nature Center, one of which comes equipped with a ton of books and toys, a rock collection and a puppet show. It's a wonderful idea - so much though that you should plan on (lots of) extra time to let your kids explore everything that's there. It also comes in real handy on a rainy day when hiking the trails around the center may not be possible.

The James & Anne Robinson Nature Center is located at 6692 Cedar Lane, Columbia, MD 21044 - right off Rt. 32. Hours of operation are Wednesday through Saturday 9 - 5 and Sunday Noon - 5. General admission is $5/adult and $3/children, kids under 3 are free. Annual memberships are also available - only $50 for a family residing in Howard County ($100 for non-residents).

Every Wednesday the Center offers complimentary admission!

my Abigail just loved that kind of place when she was child.  And I just loved the quality time with her.

Hi Chris Ann, the exhibits are wonderful. You would enjoy it I think.

Hi Jerry, it's def. a place to enjoy with the whole family. We are planing on going back this Saturday to gaze at the stars and hike one of the trails.

Hi Tammy, the girls had a blast, too. I would say their favorites were the helicopter and "who's in the mix at midnight".
