I really love living in Catonsville, MD!  We are just 10 minutes from Baltimore, a half hour from Washington, DC and just hours from beautiful beaches and New York City!

One of my family's favorite places to visit is in the western part of the state - Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County, MD!  It's a lovely drive without all the traffic of going to the beach and you get there in under 3 hours.  Maryland is sometimes called "Little America" because in this small state we have beaches, farms, and mountains all wrapped around some pretty major metropolitan areas.

Deep Creek is also the home to a premier ski resort - Wisp.  The resort has lots to offer in the summer including a 30 mile an hour mountain roller coaster, zip lines for adults and kids, segway and dune buggy tours, as well as a beautiful golf course.  It's also the home of a really unique adventure - an olympic regulation white water course high up on the mountain.  We went up on a foggy afternoon and the water was still full of people riding down on rafts and kayaks. It looked like a blast!

Deep Creek is split into 2 areas - the first is McHenry and the back part of the lake is Oakland. The McHenry area has Wisp in the background and includes Smiley's Amusements with go carts, mini golf, bumper boats and an indoor arcade.  Kids paradise right?  But wait - the same area includes the Black Bear Tavern with great food, drinks and live music on the weekend.

The Deep Creek area is also chock full of Maryland State Parks - our favorite is the Deep Creek State Park which has amazing views and a lovely, big sandy beach right on the lake.  You can picnic, barbeque, kayak, paddleboard, swim or just relax in the shady trees right by the lakeside.  There are hiking trails throughout and a nice nature/discovery center for the kids.

Another not to be missed site is Swallow Falls which is another part about 10 minutes down the road.  A short walk through the woods brings you into an almost rain forest canopy which runs along a lovely river and ends in a spectacular waterfall.  

There are a lot of places to visit in this country but it's also nice to just drive a few hours and start and end your vacation in a relaxed state of mind.
