Okay Pinterest You've Got Our Interest
I'll quickly admit that we were more than a little hesitant about the whole Pinterest thing when it first came out. Just another shiny new thing and with the risk of copyright infringement? That's not an area that we want to play in. And frankly, our social media time is fairly well booked with Active Rain, Facebook and a dash of Twitter. Adding something else to the plate? Like we need MORE to do??
So we skipped Pinterest. But recently we had one of those light bulb moments. We all know that people like pictures. Need them for a blog post, got to have the relevant eye candy whenever possible. Same thing happens on Facebook....post something serious and MAYBE a couple of your hundreds of friends will make a comment, but post a photo of a pet or a flower and suddenly you've got 50% participation!
Combine that with the growth numbers of Pinterest and maybe this social media slugger SHOULD have a place in our real estate tool chest.
We've been producing community posts and would like to get some extra mileage out of them, so why not Pin them on Pinterest?
So we created a profile and started creating some boards. Pretty easy to do. Mason Communities, Lebanon Communities, Hamilton Township Communities, Patio Homes, Market Reports. All the pinned content is straight to photos from our blogs. Warren County Things To Do...back to our blogs. Create a Board to link to the various Warren County governments (except for one....can you believe they had NO photos on their website?). Create another Board to link to the area school districts. Now we've got a one stop shop for our own reference too. Any school, any local government, two clicks away without needing a Google Search or working through numerous web browser bookmarks.
And the cool thing is local consumers are already noticing. We've had a few repins already. We've been working on our Facebook business page for some time and have a few local followers, but mostly the Likes are from other Active Rainers. Pinterest is already matching a year's worth of FB work in less than two weeks. And did we mention that a local custom builder repinned a blog post we did on one of their communities?
So we're definitely seeing some potential with Pinterest. We've got a lot of past blog posts that we can still pin to our boards, ideas yet to explore. But now part of our normal routine after posting a new hyperlocal blog is to Pin It to the appropriate board. In time we expect to see more traffic to our linked sites thanks to these pins. Will someone give us that Holy Grail "Talk to me about listing my home" or "I want to buy a house, help me" calls. TBD of course, but we like what we see so far. We ARE seeing some referrals from Pinterest to our blogs via the Google Analytics stats.

Hi Liz & Bill. I am getting so SEO weary.
Conrad, There is definitely a never ending stream of "could do" for our daily workloads.
Very creative use of Pinerest. I have yet to make it over there but really liked the way your pge(?) was displayed. The only problem I have is that someone may actually call me and want me to work :)
I signed up for Pinterest months ago. I think I need to get a little more involved. Thanks!
BB, Still figuring it out....and just realized a board with links to all the local utilities would be useful too. And just maybe it will get someone to call us :)
Gary, Still figuring out how to make it tick, but there's a load of potential there.
I haven't done anything about Pinterest yet, Bill and Liz. There's just so many things that keep cropping up that take my time away from doing it. Guess it's something we should all be doing-thanks for sharing your experience. I will go check it out.
Toni, It's at least worth a look-see to see if it fits your business strategy and the time you have available. The ever popular dilemma, where and how do we apply our limited resources?
Whatever works for you in your market that you juggle with other media options is a good thing.
Andy, And we know that recipe may vary from one area of the country to another. Find the local mix and run with it :)
I think I have over 400 followers on pinterest... and I have only put up a few pictures of our dogs. Maybe I need to get on that bandwagon too???
Jared, You're a follower generating MACHINE! Capitalize on it by mixing in some real estate stuff.
Sandy, I think some of the problem would be with people swiping photos and claiming as their own. If properly done, it seems safe enough with the linking fully maintained.
Great post Bliz. I will be joining soon. Sounds like a good way to drive traffic to my blog.
Wayne, I think in time we can develop it into a pretty solid business tool, just have to finish learning the ropes.
Bill - Jennifer was into it for a hot moment but it seems the interest on her part has waned. Like any tool (Social Media or otherwise), the interest is there from a personal and business standpoint. Will it be chronic or acute? Probably not my cup of team but if it works, use it. If it doesn't, there's always MySpace. Is that around? ;)
Cheryl, Thanks for the reblog!
Jason, It looks like it could be fun from a purely social standpoint, but I've already got venues for social fun (like reading your posts!). Pinterest needs to be mainly business for it to make sense for us.
Bill and Liz: Good for you for finding a niche in Pininterest. My girlfriend got me started when she told me to go and look at all the photos of baking - as ideas for us to use when taking photos of her food. There is a lot to see on Pininterest.
Valerie, No doubt there are hours that could be spent there daily if we let it. People find some pretty cool things, the challenge for us is to find the right balance of personal and business and not let it become a major consumer of our time.
