Races for The Running Realtor in 2008

By
Real Estate Agent with Real Estate

This year has started out great for Running and Real Estate.  New Year's Day I spent an hour or so in my office on the Guilford Green waiting for the start of the Frosty 5k. Last year I opted not to run this event in the cold pouring rain but the morning showers paused just in time for the run.  It turned out to be a personal record for me, my fastest 5k.

Real Estate is also looking very good after only two weeks of the new year.  Mortgage rates are near the historic lows and both buyers and sellers are accelerating their plans.  Before I become busy with the Spring market I always try to put together a tentative race schedule for the first half of the year.

Mana... I keep going!  One of these days I may pick a race in your territory.

Susie... They would shower us with awards but I'm not that fast... just a whole lotta fun!

Elizabeth... Running has worked out good for me with both exercise and branding benefits.

Lindsey... Time to stop thinking and Pick an Event.  Running gives you much needed alone time to think and relax.

Dan - Just thought I'd send another thank you. I found a race that's sponsored by the school at the church we attend... (hmmm, why didn't I know this before?)... I think I'm gonna aim for that! At least it's a goal. I did the 150 ms bikeride four years ago so I can jog 5 right?

Mana... One of these days I'll be out there running... A buddy of mine mentioned doing the Las Vegas Half in December but not sure if it will materialize.

Lindsey... Until a few years ago I had no clue as to all the races that are scheduled.  Now its fairly easy for me to find an event every month as a short term goal to keep me active.  You can jog a little, walk a little and jog some more.  With a few months of training you'll do fine.

ok - but seriously. Am I aiming too high to be ready in May? I've never run more than a mile before and right now can only do 3 minutes at a time! I've never been a runner, but I want this. It's a life-long goal... (I just never took myself up on it!) How long does the training take for your first 5k?

Well... You have plenty of time.... I went from nothing ( never ran ) to walking and then a 5k in about two months.  As far as only going 3 minutes I'd say that depends on speed...  If I went out today and my pace was to fast I'd tire within 3 minutes.   Do you keep track or your distance verses time?

hmmm. Nope. I know that I'm slow! I usually walk around 2.9-3.3 and jog at 4-4.2. Truly, and sadly, that's faster than two weeks ago! I have short legs and a long torso so I blame it on that (even though it's just an excuse!) Do you keep a journal every time you run or just an average in your head?

Lindsey... You have stumbled into a numbers NUT!  Yes, I have an Excel sheet with the date, distance, time and even calculate out the pace per mile and MPH that I ran.  All my running has been outside until this year, my wife gave me a gym membership for Christmas so I've been on the treadmill several times.  Not sure if those numbers reflect MPH but I'm heading to the gym now and will check it out.

Dan, that is a lot of races and you have only covered half of the year.    Are you planning to run in the Middletown 5K Race again this year???

George... I try to find a race every month... Middletown will be my second half of the year, it wasn't listed as a firm date yet on the website but the last two years it has been a Thursday night in mid-July.

Lindsey... I also studied the treadmill a little more yesterday and see that the number do indeed relate to miles per hour.  Looking back at my early days of running I was in that 4.2 range for my 5k and I averaged 5.5 currently.   What I'd say is start out walking at your 3.2 speed for a five minutes, bump it up to 4.2 for 1-2 minutes then rest at the 3.2 speed until your heart rate recovers and pick up the speed again.  As you train you'll notice it becomes easy and you'll be ready to push it up to 4.5 or so.

Thanks for the encouragement Dan! I'm gonna get right on that as soon as my boys wake up. (the treader wakes them if I'm on it while they are napping.) :-) Happy running!
