Some may have seen the photo above in a post of mine from years past, but many may not have seen it. For the "haves" and "have nots" alike, I've used it again- as it's a very special photo for me on this special day.
Most will recognize this as a map taken from an accident report- one I had 15 years ago today. On July 25th, 1997, I had the first seizure of my life- behind the wheel and going 55 mph. This diagram shows the path my car travelled that evening.
I left work in Fairfax, VA and headed home to Alexandria that Friday evening- but my trip down I-66E was less than a mile long. Witness accounts to the Virginia State Police told of how I drifted from the far right travel lane and across all others- before hitting and going over a concrete "jersey wall".
Many in the past 15 years have said "How terrible!", but I join the rest of folks who have recognized what an amazing blessing this was. The thought that I went unconscious behind the wheel...going 55mph in D.C. rush hour traffic on a Friday evening...went across traffic and over a wall and can still write about it remains tough to believe.
I made it, though- and there's no explanation for it other than to say that God had His hand on me and His eyes upon me. All lanes stopped and I wasn't hit by another vehicle. Being unconscious, I didn't see the wall coming nor brace for any impact- and that also saved me from any broken bones.
Though there are surely happier occasions out there and there have surely been down sides to the 15 years I've now spent with epilepsy, I give thanks to God today for seeing me through the wreck and for giving me the opportunity to tell others about it.
