It seems like Lake Elkhorn in Columbia, MD has mostly been making the local news because of the dredging issues. That is a shame really because it is such a beautiful area boasting its very own Arboretum and a fitness walk around the lake.
The dredging - which is finally scheduled to continue - is, of course, necessary to preserve said beauty but there's nothing wrong with showing it off occasionally either!
Lake Elkhorn is like a giant back-yard for the nearby residents of the Village of Owen Brown who just need to take a few steps to enjoy its beauty and wildlife year round and to take advantage of the trail and fitness stations. Some very fortunate home owners on Swan Point Way get to take it all in from their very own decks ...
Being a resident near Lake Elkhorn does come with an extra responsibility, however, to control run-off by installing rain gardens for example. If you need some ideas for a rain garden, head to the Robinson Nature Center at 6692 Cedar Lane - they have a demonstration of a townhome-sized back yard complete with rain barrel and compost bin.
