For those of you living in NW Austin and attending RRISD school begins on August 27th!! Everyone is gearing up to make the most of the back to school sales but don’t forget there is an added savings right around the corner of tax-free shopping!
This year, you will get a break from state and local taxes on Aug. 17th, 18th and 19th. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing and footwear individually priced at under $100. For example, if a customer purchases 2 shirts that sell for $80 each, then both items qualify for the exemption, even though the customer’s total purchase price ($160) exceeds $99.99. However, the exemption does not apply to the first $99.99 of an otherwise eligible item that sells for more than $99.99. For example, if a customer purchases a pair of pants that costs $110, and then sales tax is due on the entire $110.00.
Finding items on sale will allow you more eligible items qualified to receive tax savings.
The exemption does not apply to sales of special clothing or footwear that is only worn for athletic activity or protective use. For example, football pads or golf cleats are not normally worn except for those specific purposes, so they would not qualify.
You can find a complete list of clothing, footwear and backpacks and their exemption status during the sales tax holiday online at the Window on State Government website.

This is good local information. I can't believe it is time for going back to school.
Dorie, such a great idea for the state to do and I have seen it generate a lot of 'local' sales and keep it home town vs. the internet sales which happen this time of year...may buyers get the message in and around NW Austin.
Dorie-Thanks for that explanation. I did not realize some of the stipulations regarding the price limitations.
Dorie: We took advantage of the same program in ARK. this past weekend while visiting with family. It sure helps families get the necessary school supplies.
The people of our area took advantage of the tax free weekend and saved approximately 4 million dollars in just 48 hours. No chump change!
Our tax-free weekend just passed, Dorrie. I haven't yet heard what the sales totals were but the news covered the stores abundantly.
Hi Dorie,
The tax relief for the back to school sales are mostly in the Southern states, why is that.
I guess the Northern states don't want anything to do with tax relief. Too bad too.
Parents can save quite a bit in the tax relief days.
Have a good day in Austin and pray for Rain.
Best, Clint McKie

Hi Gita,
Is is hard to believe it's getting that time of year again... back to school!
We also had a tax free weekend but I did not have anyone buying school supplies but I had several buyers and new homeowners who were taking advantage of the savings with new appliance shopping! We even bought a new gas grill! Every little bit helps
