Did you hear we had a 3.7 & a 2.4 earthquake yesterday in Marina Del Rey?

I know to most of you it is no big deal, for those of us who live in Southern California, earthquakes are part of life. I was jolted awake from a deep sleep around 3:19am yesterday by a 3.7 magnitude earthquake. The epicenter was about 1.5 miles from Marina Del Rey, where we live. Two of our cats did not even get fazed by it and our third one looked at me sort of inquisitively. Diane slept thru the event. Keep in mind it lasted less than five seconds. Since there was no damage even the picture frames remained in their normal position I was appreciative and rolled over and continued sleeping.
Needless to say the following morning, when I had time, I checked and discovered that around 5:27am there was also a 2.4 earthquake. Lucky for all of us there were no injuries or damage reported.

Times like this we need to review our own readiness for disaster. As most of us fall into the habit of not having our “ducks in a row”, this should be a good reminder to have our Travel Bags with supplies packed and ready to go with our important documents. Especially, since when disaster strikes we do not have precious time to pack and organize things. For those of us who have pets we should have to have a plan to take them and have supplies for them as well.
So with that note, I will be periodically posting what we should be doing on an ongoing basis. For now I am just very grateful that we dogged a serious disaster this time.

I guess I thought most of your quakes were during the day. But, nevertheless, I will keep your safety in mind. You live in a great place, but sometimes the price is high.
Glad to hear everything is okay, Endre. I dealt with one right before leaving Allentown, Pa and it was quite odd. I've said it, wrote it and will do both again ... if you don't believe in a higher power, I cite Mother Nature. Take care, amigo.
We've had them in Oklahoma quite a bit during the past 12 months or more..
Wow! That is scary, Endre! I am glad that no one we hurt! 8O/
Endre -- I missed this -- glad the the earthquake did not cause a lot of damage.
Endre, I'm in earthquake country as well. Those are small ones, after going through the Loma Prieta one. Despite the quakes, I don't think I'd want to live anywhere else.
Endre, did not hear about this. We were in Malibu in a camping ground when a big one hit in the early 1990s - I will never forget it. It totally shook the ground but was over in a minute. Be prepared - good motto.
Sharon
Endre, we have so few earthquakes in Idaho that the picture looked more like red birds to me. ;-) Earthquakes are very scary in that the you always fear the aftershocks too.
In my college days I had my girlfriend spend the night once and we were in bed when a 6.9 earthquake hit near Challis, Idaho in 1983. I tell people that I have never had another woman make the whole earth shake like with me so I figured I better marry her. We got married that year and have been together ever since.
Glad you are OK! I hope you make it to the NAR conference in Orlando this year.
Endre I did not hear about this, Great opportunity to remind everyone about disaster preparedness.
Suzanne how true, yes it is not inexpensive to live here:)
Melissa, that is the best way to be, it means it was uneventful!
Jason nice to hear from you, wow most people do not think PA as Quake Country:)
Judi, I have been watching Oklahoma has been having some strange activity from mother nature.....
We have experienced many earthquake sin the Dallas are over the last few months which is unusual.
Joni, thank you for your concern, luckily it was harmless to all effected
Joan, we were all relieved as you:)
Gary I agree with you I would not want to live anywhere else either, we had some scarry ones over the years.....
Sharon & Frank wow did your Camping equipment rattle a lot?!
Jim you had me laughing so hard I could not write for about two minutes because tears were comming out of my eyes:))
Jennifer as long as we prepare for the next one!
Sharon I did not realize Dallas is Quake Country too!
Endre, good point about being prepared. Those of us in So Cal get so used to them, it's true we roll over and go back to sleep. lol
Endre, I've experienced those tremors here in the states and during business trips to Japan. Nothing like waking up in a foreign hotel with the bed moving enough to make you think you've got the vibrating bed option when you know you don't! Bill
Endre, my sister lives in Santa Monica and told me she was rather unpleasantly awakened by the sharp jolt of an earthquake - but then that was all it was. After her heart rate dropped, she was able to go back to sleep! We had a pretty good shaking here in Virginia last summer, but that's extremely rare for us. Having been through earthquakes big and small, I'll take the one you guys had over the big ones. :)
Great reminder to have your emergency kit ready to go - for all types of surprises!
Pamela, in this case it was OK that I rolled over:)
Liz & Bill I guess we have to be always prepared, speaking of which I believe Japan is probably the most prepared country for Quakes.
Mary Elizabeth I am not surprised that your sister was jolted awake since we are so close to her:)
Yes Endre, we actually have more earthquakes statewide than California. Alaska Earthquake Information Center is a great resourse.
Hi Endre -- these "little jolts" are a great reminder to be prepared....it's not a question of but when we will really need to be truly ready....
