Firefly in a Jar. Have We Lost Our Minds? Do you remember as a young child going out in the backyard to catch fireflies in a jar? We called them lightning bugs in Tennessee because they flashed like lightning.
It was great fun to wait for dusk to set in and either get a canning jar, an old mayonnaise or peanut butter jar and see how many of these little flying insects you could catch. It was a competition of sorts to see who could get the most Fireflies in a Jar.
Then some nights we would take a wiffle bat and see how many we could hit. They would sail through the air with their tails lit up, kind of like a shooting star. This sounds a little cruel but all the kids in the neighborhood did it and the lightning bugs were plentiful back then.
Now when my children were growing up I do not remember them doing this activity. If fact, I don’t remember there being very many fireflies at all. And today, I almost never see a firefly outside at all. Did we make them extinct by catching too many of them in our jars and giving them a smack with the bats?
They have been brought back by modern enterprise. Yes, you can buy a fake set of Fireflies in a Jar. Have we lost our minds? I think so. For $14.95 you can purchase a jar with a little fake insect at your nearby home improvement store.
Is it not enough to pass down the stories from our childhoods to our children and grandchildren and let them use their imaginations about how it was way back then? Now Carolyn Bock McBride has written a book, Fireflies in a Jar: Growing Up in Austin 1938-1956. I really like this idea that we could read a story to our children and grandchildren about those fun times.
If this blows your mind like it does mine that you can purchase a fake insect and pay that much for it, then good for you. We have to draw the line somewhere. Now for the news that is even more incredible. The Firefly in a Jar sold out at my local store in record time. Have we lost our minds?
But if you simply must have your own set, I think you can order them online but I think the cost is as high as $28.49. I don’t know about you, but I work too hard for my money to spend it that way.
