22 Comments on Fran's Friday Forum...GAME 2...PENN STATE...!!!
From your post: "I see colleges and high schools being union driven and tenure driven." It appears to me that you are blaming the downfall of Penn State on unions and tenure. Are you saying that I read this wrong?
Karl,
You almost read me right...There was no 'downfall of Penn State'...that problem was caused by the action of one perpetrator and several enablers...the hundreds of thousands of students educated by the University are the ones suffering for his actions...
What I'm saying about education in general is that THE FOCUS needs to be on the Students...without them there is no need for educators or administrators...unions and tenure policy have shifted the focus away from the student, and have exalted the 'system'...
BTW, upon graduation, the 'SYSTEM' doesn't even guarantee you a starting job in the field in which they educated you...how's that for accountability...!!!
Thanks, Fran
Fran, I don't see that this has anything to do with education at all. I am a big Penn State fan, try to catch their games when I can. But I fail to see how any students are ill effected by not being able to win as many games or go to bowl games for a few years. That is an entitlement mentality. They can still attend games and the fine is almost laughable if you can count 60 million as that. But it amounts to one year's revenue from just the football program. I see many families tearing themselves apart, striving to get their kids athletic scholarships and it pains me to see sports turned into big money at school levels. Seriously, I know families who never eat dinner together because of their sports schedules. But just watching the vultures inundate Penn State, swooping in to carry off as many good players as possible is sickening to me and sends a big message of how big money is in charge. The bigger picture here is universities are all about generating money, not to educate anymore. It won't hurt Penn State students to have a few losing seasons. Isn't it about how you play the game?
I just had a conversation with new neighbors who are tenured professors at Penn. I mentioned how blessed it is to have job security for life in today's world. I was lectured (no pun intended) on how stressful it is to constantly have to produce new ideas and projects that catch the attention of the politicals who grant the funding. Their whole attention is on bringing in new federal and state grants and funding, that's what tenured professors main job description is. They rely on students all the time to help do that. I just stood there dumbfounded.
Bob,
Respectfully, remind your tenured professor friends how much the revenues from Penn State's football program impacts their salaries...AND...
I don't agree with you that the right parties have been penalized. You, yourself admit the 60mil is a drop in the bucket to the administration...how will...THEY 'suffer'...they retain revenues from football games in the future, they provide fewer scholarships to future football prospects, they still get TV revenue...only the students will suffer...and they had nothing to do with this tragedy...!!!
And, YES, it is about our education system...The bozos at the NCAA who decide this and the other bozos at Penn State who agreed to it were educated in this lack luster education system of ours...
Education needs to get back to basics, teach and example values, and provide students with a quality education whereby they may find employment in their fields...!!!
With tuitions higher than they've ever been, the students are getting the short end...!!!
Thanks, Fran
But Fran, how is this negatively affecting the students? This whole fiasco is uncharted territory. The one beef I do have is that I thought the NCAA moved way too quickly and I thought PS officials put up absolutely no squawk about it. It smells to me like this is all superficial to try and make it go away as fast as possible and move on. Yes, I'd like to know how they justify the tuitions too.... the short answer is they can't. OK, take the rest of the weekend to relax, don't want you popping any arteries over this.
Fran, it does seem like a lot of the innocent get hurt in the whole penalty but it seems that has always been the case with NCAA Football. Look at SMU, they got the full death penalty years ago...
Bob: The students get hurt because they have committed four years of their lives, at a critical juncture for young people, to get educated by PENN STATE...consider members of the student body, the cheerleading squad, the marching band, and all the other colateral areas affected by this football 'noose'...You've got to think it out carefully which is what most liberals who misuse power don't have the capacity to do...The NCAA has chosen to punish the students for the sins of the administrators...Do you see anyway the administration suffers...??? Even the 60mil comes from coffers funded by student alumni and benefactors and the sports programs and sales of logos etc.
Gary: SMU is a similar abuse of authority witnessing the overreaching of the NCAA...!!!
Thanks, Fran
P.S. Bob, I will take you up on relaxing this weekend...!!!
Fran,
First I think this is only the beginning of the problems for Penn State. I imagine there may be a few lawsuits in the future which could make the 60 million look lice loose changs. Penn State has a large endowment and the trial laywers are most likely already saivationg. I do find it rather amusing watching the NCAA taking the high road as I don't believe they ever actually cared about anything other than revenue but just the same( and this comes from deep inside) I don't think the penalty goes nearly far enough. I would put forth the opinion that in every case that there is an adult abusing children there are always others who know what is going on but refuse to have the moral backbone to stand up to the accuser and do something about it. For every child that grows up wondering why someone didn't help them my heart breaks. Our country is morally bankrupt. Whether it is the genocide of the pre-born or the molesting or physical abuse of the young and helpless how long can we look the other way. I know Pennsylvania has numerous respected universities, I hope Penn State soon ceases to exist.
Hugh,
You're way off base on this one, my friend...!!! When you condemn an institution such as Penn State, you've tarnished the reputation of every man and woman who has ever attended and studied there...!!! Why must those innocent men and woman suffer for the indiscretions of a few...???
Vengeance is mine says The Lord...The supporters of abortion justify their actions by painting with such a broad brush...The Lord, however, considers each and every life to be valuable...Leave the judging to Him...!!!
Thanks, Fran
P.S. Hope all is well with you and yours...!!!
Bob,
I see your point, but bottom line is it was the students who will bear the brunt of the penalties, whatever they are...deducting wins from previous seasons, titles already earned and won...And the students don't benefit monetarily from the ticket sales, souvenir sales, licensed logo sales, etc.
BTW, When job hunting, I'd rather wave a diploma from Maine University than Penn State...!!!
Thanks, Fran
And I'd rather have the Golden Boy from ND than any other running back... excepting maybe Jim Brown. I bet you remember him don't cha? The only Heisman winner from a losing team.
Bob,
Yeah, I remember Jim Brown...didn't he star in The Dirty Dozen...???
Thanks, Fran
Yeah but I was talking about Paul Hornung of the Dirty Duo who always ran afoul of Lombardi and his curfews.... just win baby.
Bob,
Yeah, in heaven Lombardi will coach Notre Dame...!!! LOL,
Thanks, Fran
P:.S. Was never a Hornung fan...Liked Joe Montana, however...big time...!!!
Lombardi was the biggest Hornung fan and never gave up on him. He was quoted as saying he was the most gifted athlete he had ever coached. That's saying a lot. It's why I'm a Packer fan... gotta love my "Uncle Paul". Montana was argueably the best QB of all time.
Bob,
The Packers under Lombardi were a DYNASTY...!!!
Thanks, Fran
Bob, Fran and Hugh... I have many things to say about what I have read here... but I shall remain silent except for mentioning Jim Brown. Being from Cleveland... I grew up watching Jim Brown blast through just about anyone who dared get in his way.
What an incredible fullback for the Browns. It was always so funny to watch him. There he was, time and time again... after an incredible run... barely getting up off the ground, and walking back, actually more like limping back to the huddle as if his next trip would be on a stretcher... and then getting the ball on the next play, and blasting through again.
Jim Brown... one of a kind. As I recall, he retired in the prime of his career with the Browns. He was, and I am sure, still is... his own man.
Fran... I guess for Jim Brown... it WASN'T all about the money.
Karen Anne,
I too vividly remember Jim Brown, perhaps the toughest back in NFL history. And I can relate perfectly to your description of him, particularly limping back to the huddle, then on the next play breaking through the line for another big gain...!!!
Thanks, Fran
P.S. Silence is Golden...!!! LOL
Yeah, but Paul was the Golden Boy and won more championships... just win baby!
