Pretty Peacocks

This peacock is called the Indian Peafowl and is the national bird of the Republic of India.

Beautiful Peacocks

Peacocks are actually called peafowl. Males are called peacocks and females are called peahens. Babies are called peachicks.

Beautiful Peacocks

The male peacock is one of the largest flying birds. Their total length can reach near 8 feet; about 3 feet for the body and about 5 feet for the tail (train). Peacocks weigh about 9-13 pounds. Females are not as colorful and much smaller

Beautiful Peacocks

Peacocks are ground feeders. They eat plant parts, flower petals, seed heads, ticks, ants, termites, locusts, mice, scorpions, and small reptiles and amphibians.

Beautiful Peacocks

The male's beautiful tail is used to attract females to mate with. To get her attention, he will open it wide into a splendid fan and do a complex dance. The tail vibrates, making a rattling sound while they show off their shimmering colors. It is believed that the female peacock chooses her mate with the most impressive tail. They admire the eye markings on their tails and are said to mate with the male who has more "eyes".

Males normally have a harem of 2-5 peahens. Each hen will lay 3-5 eggs. After the eggs hatch (about 28 days), the peachicks are able to walk and eat on their own within hours. They can fly when they are about a week old.

Hi Sharon,

Peacocks are fascinating birds and so beautiful. I was not surprised to hear that the female peahens did not have as nice of feathers since this is true of many birds.

Hi Patty,

I agree they have a real beauty. I wonder if maybe the birds are protected like our eagles are. It is probably easier to breed peacocks than our eagles. I have read that many predatory birds do not like to breed in captivity and they have many hazards like electrical wires and hunters here in the US.

I tried to get a picture of the tail feathers open but only once when had turned around for a second. Missed it..,.oh darn. Next time I go to the SD Zoo, I will try to get a full tail picture. Have a great weekend. How is you little chihuahua? I have a little white one and her name is Tootie.

Hi Nick,

I recall it LA somewhere a couple of years ago, about 20-30 peacocks decided to hang out in a neighborhood and disturb the residents plus after being on TV every night, drivers were coming into the area so the noise was unbearable. Finally they moved on but it was a long 4 months especially for the homeowners so pretty is does not always mean pretty does.

Hi Greg,

I had never heard the peacock tail feather's spots called eyes before but they do remind me of an eye. They are very intriguing birds.

Hi Debra,

They were walking around very quiet but then once one got upset and then they all became upset. Figures, it was the female making all the noise and I think the male was flirting with someone walking by!

Hi Kerrie,

Charlie is so cute so be sure to post camping photos including him too. My Tootie is going to the groomers today and she will not be very happy until it is over and them she smiles and struts around. Gidget loves the groomers. I never take CoCo as she hates it and they make me pay extra for behavior problems. She is so strong that when I bathe her, I keep the collar on so I can control her. She is 16 lbs of power and muscle.

Don't forget to post Charlie pictures too.
