Pardon Me For Being Picky - But... It's REALTOR® Not Realtor

I'm the first to admit we can get in a hurry and use the incorrect word from time to time as we're blogging away.  Sometimes it's an honest mistake.  After all, spellcheck doesn't let us know if we use their when we mean there.  I once sent a comment to my buddy Mike Jones.  He was very sweet and sent me an email to let me know what I wrote and what I meant to say were two different things.  I intended to tell him that his post was insightful and had used the word inciteful.  I meant to say he'd opened my eyes to something, not that he caused me to get my dukes up!

So, this post is intended to give a bit of insight to all here who are involved in the practice of real estate and supporting businesses.  After all, if we are making a living in the profession, it would be a good idea to know the proper use of terms involved in the practice of that profession right?  Since incorrect use of the vocabulary of one's profession could give rise to some doubts as to our abilities, I offer the following regarding the use, pronunciation, and how to keyboard the word REALTOR®.

1) Pronunciation - REALTOR® is 'rē(-ə)l-tor.  It is not re - litter.

2) Spelling - Proper use of the word is REALTOR® (it is a registered trademark in all capital letters followed by a registered trademark symbol.)  It is not to be written realtor or Realtor.

3) Definition - A real estate agent may be a REALTOR®,  but not all agents are REALTORS®.  Only members in good standing of the National Association of REALTORS® may use the term REALTOR® in their advertising or marketing.  For more information click here.

4) The registered trademark symbol  "®" is a part of the term REALTOR® or REALTORS®.  Here's how to include it in your text.  Hold down the Alt key and press 0174 on your 10 key pad.  Voila! ® (If you're using a laptop with no ten separate ten key pad, you'll need to use the "num lock" to convert part of your keyboard to a ten key pad.)

Just thought you'd like to know.

William - I so appreciate your passion.  Thank you for making the distinction that REALTOR.com is a small part of what NAR is and does to promote our profession and to encourage us to maintain a high standard of professionalism.

Galel - Thanks for pointing this one out.

Jeff - Thanks for the info.  I do think that whenever possible, we must use the preferred form.

Joanie - OMG - I can't believe I finally was able to share something with you. I've learned so much from your posts.

LaNita - Thanks for taking it in the spirit it was intended.

See what I learn from subscribing to your blog?  Hold down the Alt key and press 0174.  Voila! ®  I was opening Microsoft Word, inserting the symbol, copying and pasting.  Next thing you know, I'll be trying to use White-out on my computer screen...

Hi Mike - Glad this was useful info.  The white out on the screen sounds like an old blond joke---BTW I'm not a natural blond and will claim my brown roots to the death!

Marlene...

It's kind of a pet peeve of mine too...

Around these parts they say (as is the southern way)...

Real-A-Tor. Yes. They turn it into three words :)

TLW - Maybe it's just me, but I tend to question the ability of those who pronounce it incorrectly.  I once worked in the nuclear power industry and I cringed every time I heard "nuke-you-lar.

Marlene, Good information, now I think I need to go back and edit my recent post.  I like the part about pronunciation. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but nothing happens when I do alt|0174. I think I'll try Jeff's REALTOR alternative.

Hi Georgina - If you're using a laptop, you'll need to press your numlock kiey and use the keypad numbers on your keyboard.  Hope this helps.

Rich - Are you using a notebook or laptop?  If so, check out the above response to Georgina.

Hi Heather - The copyright symbol is Alt 0169.  The way to find the shortcuts to all the symbols is to go into Word.  Click on tools.  Click on Symbols.  Find the symbol you want to use, click on it.  Look at the bottom of that window and you'll see "shortcut".  It will give you the shortcut for the symbol for future use.

I just use option+r to get ®, but then I use a Mac. Thousands of REALTORS® are not even licensed to sell real estate. It truly is silly to misuse the term as generic reference to real estate agents.

Hi Greg - Thanks for the Mac tip.  And, yes, the word REALTOR® is mis-used generically to mean real estate agent.  Unfortunately, the public is generally unaware that as REALTORS® we must adhere to a higher standard and code of ethics that individuals who simply hold a license do not.  Thanks again for the Mac tip.

Since the dictionary has "Realtor", I think we are on solid grounds using that term as long as it is capitalized. I think that non-Realtors would think us a bit anal if we constantly used REALTOR®.

Of more concern is Ron Parise's comment that he is embarrassed to be a Realtor.  What's that all about, Ron?

Hi Bill - Thanks for sharing your opinion.  I don't understand why anyone would be a member of an association they are embarassed to be a part of but Ron must have his reasons.

Sandra - If you're working on a laptop without a ten key pad, you'll need to use the num lock  to convert part of the keyboard to a ten key and then alt 0174.  If you use the numbers across the top of your keyboard it dowsn't work.

Hi Jennifer - So glad you like this feature.  It's especially nice when you're filling in a form online.
