Unpack and Relax: Setting Up Your New Richmond Home
You’ve arrived at your new home. What now?
1. First Things First
Your movers are on a tight schedule, so help them out. Go through your home room by room, and put up colored signs that match the colored dots on your boxes. Your movers will be able to deliver boxes to the right rooms easily and quickly.
2. Room Setup
Movers are there to get your boxes and furniture from the truck inside the home. If you’re using a good moving company, they should ask you where large furniture should go. But you’ll have a lot going on that day, and you may want to adjust where you initially had your movers place your furniture after they leave. Furniture slides are your friend (and your back’s friend!). They are inexpensive and easy to use…so easy, in fact, that you may decide to leave them under the feet of your heavy items to move them around in the future.
3. Know Your Priorities
You’ve got a ton of boxes lying around. Where to start? Think about what you need to be able to access daily. Your Survival Box and other essential boxes should be your starting place, along with rooms everyone will use like the bathroom (where’s the TP?)and kitchen.
4. Unpack with a Plan
Evaluate the room you’re in and the boxes in the room before you begin. Think about how you want the room to look once you’re done. The box labels should be clear enough that you feel confident in knowing what is in each one without opening it. Start with the largest items or with items that have a clearly designated home already (books go on the bookshelf). As each additional item is unpacked, make a home for it.
5. Keep Out the Clutter
If your new space doesn’t have room for every item you own, start a donation pile. Someone else may need exactly the thing you no longer have space for, and you’ll keep your own new Richmond home free of clutter.
6. Stay On Top of Boxes
If the box is empty but not broken down, it’s taking up too much space. Break down boxes as you go, and be sure to empty each box before moving on to the next one. There’s nothing more frustrating and paralyzing in an unpack job than standing up, looking around, and seeing empty and half-unpacked boxes everywhere. *Tip: Many Richmond home sellers or other Richmond home buyers are always in need of your empty boxes. Think about advertising the boxes on Freecyle or Craigslist. It helps you out and your fellow mover!
7. Don’t Miss the Small Stuff
You’ve flattened all your boxes except one, which is stuffed with packing paper. All done? Not quite. Packing paper has a way of hiding small items or tiny, loose pieces, so take a moment to flatten out each piece of packing paper to ensure nothing is missed. Tip: Often the packing paper can replace paper towels when it comes to washing windows and such. Reduce, REUSE, Recycle!
8. Oh My Gosh, I’m Totally Overwhelmed by This List
If there’s just way too much going on for you to stay sane while unpacking alone, consider hiring a Richmond professional organizer for a smooth, stress-free move. Organizers thrive on straightening out chaotic situations like clutter-filled spaces and half-unpacked homes, so don’t worry about being judged or feel embarrassed about asking for help.
