Working SmartI was at a Starbucks recently with a builder and an architect and sprawled across the table was a big blueprint and MUCH discussion of where the custom home was headed down the road. It made me SO realize the KEY to WORKING SMART.

It is THINKING, EVALUATING, PLANNING.

We have to slow down daily if need be and see what we are accomplishing or not. Put some THOUGHT into our activities. Make some adjustments, make some corrective plans.

Too often we mistake busyness for effectiveness and we need to slow down for ten minutes and sharpen that axe prior to chopping down more trees. Even in social media with a business page, how effective is it? Don't overwhelm yourself with too much time on something with limited results.

The person who invented the wheel by deliberate thought or by a log rolling down the mountain and observing that in the Cave Man days, he or she was well on their way to WORKING SMART.

You'll get much further ahead FASTER in your business life and your personal life with doing those three things.

Hi - I AGREE!   The late Stephen R Covey in his book "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" taught us to "place all the big rocks first and all the others would fall into place around them".  He also taught us to "sharpen the saw" - just as you described above.   Thanks for reminding me to look at my big rocks and Make a Plan again!   Shanna

SLOW DOWN is one of the biggest things we can do to be more productive.  Going to fast we miss stuff and have to re-trace our steps.

Hi Gary, this is the right direction to be sure but we should always allow a little space for spontaneity too.  William is right, it is counter-productive to have to stop and retrace our steps.

Hi Gary,

The very best plan is the one we develop and actually implement. Making plans by themselves will never achieve success except by others that might copy and then implement the plan.
