Cluck, Cluck, Chickens in the Backyard- The Clarksville City Council members are debating the issue of whether it will be acceptable for homeowners to have up to 6 chickens in their backyards in the city limits. While selling houses in Clarksville TN, I do not want to have to say, “Guess what, you can have your own set of chickens in your backyard, Isn’t that wonderful?”
When I heard that this was a heated topic at the last City Council meeting, I almost could not believe it. I really thought that local government had more important decisions to make and topics to discuss like public transportation, our schools, roads and infrastructure, the arts, parks and recreation and our tax base.
Some constituents brought this concern to a Councilwoman and she began to think that maybe it was a good idea. Other Council members also began to think that it may be an option worth considering. Cluck, Cluck, Chickens in the Backyard.
Clarksville TN is a progressive city with a population in the city of around 150,000. We have some fine new schools, lots of shopping and restaurants, beautiful parks, a new marina and a Historic Downtown District. So why would we want to step back to decades before and allow chickens in our backyards?
Now fresh eggs are wonderfully delicious and I get that. But if you want to gather them daily in your backyard, then move to the country. If you live in a subdivision with restrictions against having poultry, then you may not be affected. But if you are the last lot in the subdivision next to a house that is not in a subdivision, then you could very well have chickens for neighbors.
The Council needs to think about this a great deal more before they make this change. The smell, sanitary conditions and additional noise need to be considered. And on top of that, who would police the backyards to make sure roosters don’t get in and the numbers don’t exceed the magic number of 6, the Chicken Police?
Cluck, Cluck, Chickens in The Backyard. Unbelievable!
