Ahoy...Ship is in Port

Today we went to the Port of Los Angeles to see the recently renovated USS IOWA, the Naval Battleship that has been designated a floating museum. It was very exciting and I highly recommend it to all. It makes you feel very patriotic just knowing you are standing on the ship that traveled the seas for 50 years protecting our shores.

The ship was built in 1939 and commissioned in 1940. It served as an active battleship for 50 years. Three presidents stayed on board; George Bush Sr., Franklin D Roosevelt, and Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy. The ship was decommissioned in 1990.

We walked around and there were many military Veterans who volunteer their time to answer questions and escort us around the ship.

We had a good time and it was not crowded at all.

One of the veterans told me they cannot make any major renovations as the ship still belongs to the Navy and they could take it back if needed.

But we did find a lot of visitors in the gift shop on the way out.  

We ordered our tickets on line; $18 per person. Go to the web site to get all the information at tickets for USS Iowa. I highly recommend everyone come for a visit and bring the kids but make sure  you wear walking shoes as there was quite a few steps to the different levels.
