The Inn at Playa Del Rey – A Charming Getaway at the Beach in Los Angeles
The Inn at Playa Del Rey in Playa Del Rey CA near Los Angeles is a real find.
I know, because I just spent the night there for an anniversary celebration.
Reminiscent of a Cape Cod inn, with wonderful views of the Ballona Wetlands, and with Playa Del Rey beach homes and the boats moored at Marina Del Rey in the distance, the Inn at Playa Del Rey was a step back in time, where relaxation immediately sets in upon entering and you feel more like a guest in a private home.
There is no doubt you are emersed in a small Southern California beach community, with all the sights, sounds and smells (the ocean, and lots of restaurants) one would expect. The beach itself is just a few blocks away, as is the 26-mile South Beach bicycle path, but with the back of the Inn facing the wetlands you may not want to even leave other than to have dinner.
The feeling of seclusion at a romantic hideaway is in stark contrast to the city of Los Angeles just minutes away – indeed, the LA skyscrapers, the Hollywood Hills, and mountains surrounding the LA basin and up the coast past Malibu can be seen in the distance, veiled in the mist (OK maybe it WAS smog).
If you really miss city life, it’s not far away from the Inn at Playa del Rey.
But that’s precisely why the Inn at Playa Del Rey is so successful – a quaint place and time to escape the rat race and relax at the beach, charmed by the views, the Inn’s amenities (fireplaces, courtyards, free parking, free bikes, books and movies, free wifi, a wonderful living room to relax in and enjoy more views), a bountiful breakfast served in a charming dining room with views and fireplace, wine and hors d’oeuvres in the evening, and a friendly helpful staff who treat you like their personal guest at home.
The Inn at Playa Del Rey is on Culver Boulevard, which has some traffic, so rooms on south side will have some noise, but rooms facing the wetlands were amazingly quiet, although at a higher price because of the views. Each guest room and suite (we peeked in many doors) is unique in size, style and décor – our corner view room on the second floor was wonderful - with a range of accommodations (21 rooms) and pricing to suit most budgets.
The Inn at Playa Del Rey was truly a wonderful escape and we plan to stay there again. I highly recommend a visit if you are in the area!
