Uff-Da!

HOW DO YOU SAY UFF-DA!

Uff-Da! If you live in North Dakota or in Minnesota Uff-Da is a common saying. We think it’s Norwegian for ”what the heck” but I was just thinking, maybe it doesn’t mean anything at all in the Norwegian language. After all Uff-Da is understood up here if you say it whether you drop a big rock on your foot or if a pretty girl walks by you in shorts and a halter top (the girl, not you). I guess either way it still says “what the heck”.  OK, it’s understood whether someone unexpectedly punches you in the belly while you are drinking a beer or if Publishers Clearing House stops at your home with a big check. I guess either way it still says “what the heck”. Uff-Da, I keep going in circles don’t I?

So I was wondering what they say “in your neck of the woods” (that’s another popular saying up North here).

I’ve heard in some places “ii yiii iii” or something to that effect is used just like Uff-Da”.  So how about it, what do they say in your neck of the woods when you drop a big rock on your foot or if a pretty girl walks by you in shorts and a halter top? I’ve heard in California it’s “Oh Baby”. Is that true?

Uff-Da

Bob...

That's a funny question, and I have to think about it. I don't think that I ever heard "uff-da" but when I drop something on my toe I use the classic "thank you sir, may I have another!"

I've never heard the term, "uff-da" Bob!  I hear a lot of "what the. . ." in my region though!  It is fun to find little pockets of humanity around the country who have their own little dialect:-)

Myrl, I thought it was hilarious last year when when Obama used the initials of WTF for some program and Sarah Palin picked up on it and said "truly, WTF?" referring to the phrase you mention. Aside from that instance I think it's a horrible saying and hope I never hear it come out of my children's mouths.
