65 Years As the Largest Office in the World: Relocating to Work in the Pentagon

Pentagon Happy Birthday!

Today marks 65 years since The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia was dedicated on January 15, 1943. For 65 years, The Pentagon has remained the largest office in the world. Over 23,000 military and civilian employees and about 3,000 non-defense support persons work in this massive five-sided building just across the Potomac River from Washington D.C.

U.S. Military personnel from all around the world often get the chance to relocate to work in the Pentagon. All branches of the military have offices in this headquarters for the Department of Defense.

Pentagon employees choose to live throughout the metro-D.C. area. There's even a sophisticated system of cooperative transportation to and from the Pentagon called slugging (with its own etiquette, rules, and official or unofficial commuter stops).

An entire infrastructure of residential neighborhoods, restaurants, and shopping have developed around the Pentagon area. Across Army-Navy Drive from the Pentagon sits one of the area's largest shopping malls, The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, anchored by Macy's and Nordstroms. More recently, Pentagon Row was developed adjacent to The Fashion Centre and includes many outdoor eateries, a gym, spa, and a Harris Teeter grocery store.

Many options exist for housing when you are part of a military relocation to The Pentagon. Bus routes, and the Metro subway lines all lead to The Pentagon, and there are also many carpooling options, making living further out from Arlington a possibility for Pentagon employees. NAOMA: Thanks for your comment. The Pentagon is massive. I took a private tour there years ago and it's amazing how big the place really is -- people who work there need maps just to navigate!

SALLY: Yes, the size of the Pentagon is overwhelming. You should see the expanse of the many parking lots!

The good thing is that it has a metro stop. Traffic kills getting to Pentagon parking.

SCOTT: Yes, and a very busy metro stop at that. When I used to work at an office in D.C., I would take the bus to the Pentagon and get on the metro there every day.

We just left DC and our good friend works at the Pentagon. It is an amazing place to work.

Our friend slugs all the way from Fredericksburg! I just read through the history of slugging, IMO, it is just fascinating!

Good story and I am sure you will love this.... I saw this post on my Google Alerts before I saw it from A/R! Google likes you.

KRISTEN: I've only slugged myself once years ago. The bus was running late and a driver pulled up and said "Who's going to downtown D.C.?" -- we made it there quickly in the HOV lane.

Great post. Thanks for the link to Slugging. Never heard of it and had to look at the site. It is really neat how such an informal system got started that long ago and still works to this day!

Brian: Great post. My son is a Lt. Commander stationed at the Pentagon. He commutes in from Fairfax. He said the trains are packed with commuters. I'm very proud of my son and I'm looking forward to a visit there this spring to see the Pentagon and visit the malls nearby! I love mall shopping!
