Observation and Preparation

37 seismic events (Earthquakes) for the last 168 hour (one week) period of observation. One event at 3.6 yesterday morning near Emery UT, in the minor earthquake category ~ the remainder registered in the micro category (with one at 2.3).

recent earthquakes, Intermountain West

This is a week in the Intermountain West (Utah to Yellowstone). My hobby is observing seismic events in this area.

My choice of area is because I live here; information is readily available from the US Seismic Service at the University of Utah. My hobby is one of observation NOT prediction. My intent is to inform, never to alarm.

I am aware of information provided by the Utah Seismic Safety Commission ("It's our Fault"):

Utah has experienced damaging earthquakes in the past and geological evidence indicates that earthquakes larger than experienced locally in historical time are likely in the future.

Utah averages a magnitude 6 earthquake once every 15 to 20 years.

Of their tip sheets, I heed especially:

Tips for the Elderly

Tips for the Disabled.

Along with "Duck and Cover", and possessing a whistle, the Commission advises to be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least three days.

Good advice for those who like to be prepared for emergencies. I am one of them.

these seismic events, would they be originating from Yellowstone?  Is it increasing over the last few years?  Will it be a part of the December 21, 2012 thing under the Aztec Calendar?

Bruce - annual activity around here numbers in the hundreds of events. All normal activity. The Safety Commission suggests a "Seismic Belt" "about 100 miles wide extending north - south along the Wasatch Front from St George to Richfield UT. The mountains out my window are those of the Wasatch Front. ps no local evidence of Aztec activity.
