Last year parents in the Boynton Beach neighborhoods of Canyon Isles, Canyon Lakes, Canyon Springs and Canyon Trails began lobbying The Palm Beach County Zoning Commission for a neighborhood charter school.  On July 5th, the commission voted 5-1 recommending approval of the conditional use permit for the school; but the final vote was still pending and parents waited with bated breath for the July 26th vote.

Canyon Isles, Canyon Lakes, Canyon Springs and Canyon Trails are wonderful neighborhoods for people of all ages.  The resort-style pool and spas at the clubhouses are second to none and the amenities for children can’t be beat.  The neighborhoods have kiddie pools, water play centers, kid’s facilities, parks and playgrounds.  What’s m
ore exciting is that now the area is getting it's very own charter school!  As of Thursday, July 26th, the Palm Beach County Zonning Commission approved plans for Somerset Middle and High School in a 6-1 vote.

The new school will be built on Boynton Beach Boulevard just west of Lyons Road and will accommodate 2,100 middle and high school students.  Currently, the high school students that live in Canyon Isles, Canyon Lakes, Canyon Springs and Canyon Trails have to catch buses around 6:00am to commute to Olympic Heights Community High School in Boca Raton.  Whereas Olympic Heights is a great school, it's two towns away and these students often don’t return home until late in the evening.  The new school located near the Canyon communities will allow children to attend school with their fellow Canyon neighbors, they will grow up together and have a real sense of ‘neighbor’hood.  Children will also be able to walk or ride their bikes to school, as opposed to being bused to a different city at the crack of dawn.

14 Acres of Land for Charter School                                     Proposed Location

The land that GL Homes has given the school district encompasses 14 acres and is the proposed site for Somerset Charter School.  Residents have stated that GL Homes, who built Canyon Isles, Canyon Lakes, Canyon Springs and Canyon Trails, promised a charter school would be built when they bought their homes.  Kevin Ratterree, vice president of GL Homes, stated the developer didn’t promise a school by a specific date, but that they did give land to the school district that could be used for a 'future' school.  Now that the commission has voted in favor of the new school, the plans are to break ground in August, 2013.  What an exciting time for Canyon Isles, Canyon Lakes, Canyon Springs and Canyon Trails residents and their children!
