The Games of the XXX Olympiad

Yahoo and other internet overloaded, Facebook and Twitter flaky, input to ActiveRain slowed down. Could it be the result of the XXX Olympics in London.

Aussie participation in London Olympics

A two-week distraction that is a Summer/Winter event every four years.

Hours and hours of visual coverage and verbal comment, where everyone can become an (armchair) expert on everything from tiddly-winks to synchronized swimming, from sand scrapping to rhythmic gymnastics, from bark paddling to martial arts mayhem.

Longer in duration and effect than Royal Weddings/Funerals, or Innaugurations, and much more riveting than Political Elections. Such National fervor without bias or discrimination!

But, stone the crows, mate, spare a thought for us foreigners trying to savor our own National pride. Or even to get updates on results.

The media has London 2012 as the USA Games with a few other countries attending to provide the competition numbers and the validation for the celebration.

So far I have heard Australia (and I wouldn't be in any way biased in my thinking) described as a "swim mad nation and a medal annoyance". I could live with "a burr under the saddle blanket of US competitors" description in such a dearth of comment on foreign performance.

Anyhow, the Games are a celebration of excellence, and inspirational effort, with a world of stories behind every performance.

I enjoy it all as much as the next man, distraction or no.

Larry -- the Brisbane Times seems to have a good set of links for the Australian coverage:  http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/olympics/live-blog-london-2012/live-coverage-london-olympics-day-5-20120801-23f8p.html

Steven - thanks for the link. Good descriptive coverage, warts and all.  Definitely enough Aussie bias to make me feel like I'm in the right place. Certainly acknowlrdges the efforts of world athletes.
