Americana #5 - Big Band Swing

There is no doubt that jazz is a uniquely American phenomenon. Its' African American roots were firmly planted and nurtured in the South.

It was the music of the Roaring Twenties and spread rapidly throughout the country with styles developed in other cities such as Kansas City and Chicago. Jazz differs from earlier musical genres in that one or more individual musicians are featured and improvise on the tune while the rest of the band plays plays accompaniment.

Big Band Swing was the jazz of the 30's and 40's - it was considered a morale builder in World War II. The typical big band of men like Miller, Ellington, Shaw, Berigan and Krupa had 17 musicians. Their instruments included 2 alto sax, 2 tenor sax, 1 bass sax, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and a 4 piece rhythm section.

The USN Commodores is the Navy's premier jazz ensemble. They travel extensively to entertain our troops and the public. Recently, my husband and I attended a performance at Harris Pavilion in Manassas.and made a video of a medley of several very popular songs of the period. How many can you name?
