Encinitas Kitchen Photo

By
Real Estate Agent with SurfTheTurf.com, Inc.

We just got done photographing a new listing, and I liked this photo so much, I thought I would share it with the group.  What I really liked about this photo was the degree to which the light was bouncing around in the room.  There are a lot of shiny surfaces, and they all help give definition to the room.  The reflections in the granite are great, but so are the muted relctions of sunlight in the wood by the windows, in the hanging lamp fixtures, and even the oranges on the counter and the red cookie jar (which is our prop of choice for these reasons - great color and great shape and highly reflective).

Anyway, ARers, I hope you like it too.  I'll share the brochure on Friday.

Nice picture.  That kitchen is HUGE!  Quite a lot of granite to clean and polish.... Makes me want to see the rest of the house.

Margaret, great photo but I'd expect nothing less from you!

I wish that the last couple of homes I listed were as photogenic.  I was tempted to leave the lights off. :)

Margaret - it is beautiful.  I love the view out the window, it doesn't even look like there is any glass in the window.

I shoot with a Canon 5d with a 24mm tilt/shift lens.  I bracket the photos and then cut and paste various components to create the final composite.  In this case, the windows and reflection of the windows in the granite were a separate exposure and then pasted in afterwards.

Margaret,

I've been following your blog and visiting your website for a few weeks now.  Thank you for sharing your "how to" knowledge and helping us become better professionals.  I love your photography (your thought processes behind it too).  You're the reason I'll soon take pictures with such a high level of quality.  It's a budget buster, but it's a worthy long term investment (I love photography regardless ... win-win).

Great picture and kitchen.  The cutting and pasting of the window is fantastic.  It really helps bring the outside in!

Margaret - I have enjoyed your photos and appreciate the technical comments and tutorials that you and John have provided.  I think, in all of AR, the Photography group has attracted some of the premiere talent in the country.  We have enjoyed brilliant digital imagery from professional photographers and architectural photographers - but your work has particularly interested me in that you are a working Realtor who brings your digital wizardry to every listing you have - even including rentals.

I hope your clients appreciate your skills and recognize the competitive advantage you bring to the table as a true professional.

Thank you for all you do.

Someone recently suggested that this photo is not "real" enough on the basis that the photo is not properly color balanced and could be improved.

Different photographers have different styles.  Our style tends towards warm images with buttery tones.  These make for particularly beautiful brochures instead of stark whites.  AND, we have found that these buttery tones sell houses more quickly because people respond to the photos.  In this particular example, the brochures bearing this photo helped get the home sold (pending actually) in less than three weeks.  NOT TOO BAD in this market.

So, the short responses to the comment are: 1) We create our photos for brochure printing, and the end result is very attractive even if they may appear a tad pink in the online images; 2) We create our brochures for the explicit purpose in getting people excited about the homes so that we can sell our clients' homes; 3) It works - warmer images perform better than colder, starker images; and 4) Even if warmer images only performed equally well, we like the look and that's our photographic style, and we encourage everyone to develop their own "look."

If you'd like to get a copy of the brochure that uses this photo, feel free to email me at Margaret.AR ( at ) SurfTheTurf.com.
