Home Inventory: Know Your Stuff
This post was provided by our friends at Olde Key Title in Maryland.
"According to the article titled “Tools for a do-it-yourself home inventory”, written by David Pitt and published in the Washington Beacon, “[e]veryone should keep an up-to-date list of their belongings.” Such a list is extremely important in case of theft, fire, or other serious damage. One way to create this list is by pen and paper. Another way is by using software programs. One of the most recent, and free, software was released by the Insurance Information Institute (III) which is available on www.knowyourstuff.org. You can even access this software on your iPhone by using the III Inventory application. On either the website or the app, you are able to enter a list of your belongings and can also upload photos, receipts, and appraisals. This software, along with other similar software, allows you to access this inventory from anywhere. Other similar inventory software programs are available on www.insureuonline.org, which is offered by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners."
If you have seniors in your circle of friends or family, think about volunteering to assist with a home inventory. Take photographs of everything. Some of us have seen estate sales where there was no clue as to the value of collections.
After the inventory is completed, take time to visit Longwood Gardens.

Good Morning Roy, this is a great reminder as most do not think about it until it is too late and something happens. Have a great Friday
Roy...I only stopped by to smell the flowers and rest and relax on your post....thank you
Roy,
This is an excellent idea as offered by your title company, and I wish I could visit your gardens with you and Dolores. I am sure you would point some amazing delights. A
Hi Roy,
The list is a must have for everyone. Even though there are only a handful of home owners that actually do this.
A video of the homes contents is always a welcome sight to the adjuster when trying to settle a claim.
Hopefully there will never be a claim, but you have to be ready for any thing.
Have a good day in the Kentlands.
Best, Clint McKie
Roy, I have heard this many times over the years, yet have still not done it. With digital equipment, there really is no excuse. Thanks.
Roy, That is a great idea. my husband has started carrying a backup of our computer system in his car and changes it once a week. After the crazy Colorado fires this year, he doesn't want to take any chances.
Thanks so much for your comments. Most of us need to complete a home inventory.
Have a great weekend.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend out in the sun with your camera!
Roy, great tip and only wish my brother had it and used it. His house was robbed when he was in Nevado six weeks ago....after the robbers broke down the door with an axe (he did have an alarm system) took what they wanted and then used kerosene and burned the house. My brother got the call from the alarm company while in Nevada and by the time his friends got there, the fire dept and police were on site. So, I will definitely be using this software.
Roy,
Thanks for the excellent tip about the home inventory software. I like the fact that essentially this data is in the clouds after it is entered.
It is a major task to do a home inventory but not having the information can lead to undesired results. Every executor wishes for a better inventory of personal property.
Rebecca provided a fine example. Her brother did not expect his home to be looted and then burned.

Wow! This is GREAT information, Roy! Thanks so much for sharing it with us!
With hurricane season upon us, it is smart to have a home inventory. Thanks for sharing, Roy!
Please share these tips with your database contacts. Too many of us never get around to the household inventory that can be so important after damage, theft or death.

Gosh, when we thing of the apps and software available today, it really is astonishing. The possibilities and capabilities are beyond our imagination, even a decade ago! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend, Roy!
Performing a home inventory can be a daunting task. I always suggest grouping your belongings into categories. Then divide by room. That way you can cross reference by room or category. Make sure you assemble a notebook holding all the information on your home inventory. Include pictures, receipts, descriptions, value, etc. Make sure the notebook is protected in a fire proof safe or in a safety deposit box. Also make sure someone trustworthy (attorney, children) know where the book is just in care you are not available.
