Micro-Unit Apartments Trending in the 21st Century Part One

Ever wonder what is most important to a person looking for a residence? Here is a glimpse into an answer. For the Tenants of these proposed apartments, the answer will be PERSONAL SPACE in the LOCATION they want for themselves.

A design competition sponsored in mid-July by Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City, the "New Housing Marketplace Plan" seeks to expand the availability of affordable units of a micro-size. Bloomberg seeks to have 165,000 new and renovated units in place by the end of fiscal 2014.

The program kicked off with adAPT NYC Competition to be located in a city-owned property located at 335 E. 27th Street in the Kips Bay area. The project calls for at least 75% of the apartments at the site to be micro-units, each with a Kitchen and a Bathroom and all in a space of 275 to 300 square feet.

In order to run this project, the zoning restriction of nothing smaller than 400 square feet has been waived by the City. E. Durkin at the NY Daily News quotes Janel Laban, executive editor of apartmenttherapy.com - "People get a lot of satisfaction from making a small space that they are proud of." She further suggests "freeing up floor space by using hanging shelves and lots of lighting."
