Tuesday, August 7th, 2012 is the 29th annual National Night Out and many Montgomery County, MD communities are participating.

According to the National Association of Town Watch, "America's Night Out Against Crime" brings communities together to take a stand against crime and drugs. Through the collaboration of neighborhoods, law enforcement, civic groups and businesses the evening helps foster community spirit, raises awareness, generates support for crime and drug prevention programs and sends " a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back".

Traditionally, communities show their participation by displaying outdoor lights and holding front porch vigils and block parties. These get-togethers are not only a great way to meet new neighbors, they are also designed to strengthen the community-police partnership and usually include visits from local police and/or fire departments as well as safety and crime fighting demonstrations.

2012 National Night Out participating communities in Montgomery County, MD include:

Olney: Fair Hill Shopping Center 5 - 8 pm
Rockville: various subdivisions
Silver Spring: various subdivisions
Gaithersburg: various subdivisions/businesses
Takoma Park: Piney Branch Elementary School
Bethesda: Rosemary Hills Community & National Park Seminary

Hi Donna, I read somewhere that Texas is the only State who holds it in October - understandable with the temps though.

Hi Tammy, the communities organize the block parties, register it at the NATW site & inform their local police department.  Perhaps something to organize at Lake Sinclair next year?

OK, well now I need to check and see if we have a National Night Out event going on.  I read John's post early this morning and now I am reading yours and it didn't occur to me that National probably means EVERYwHERE in the States lol :)!  Duh...
