The Town Board of Liberty Grove, Wisconsin has passed a historic "Heritage Roads" program, the first of it's kind for Door County. This program has been created and is identified to help maintain certain rural roads with a special rustic character as "destinations" in the Town where one can travel at a leaisurely pace and enjoy flora and fauna that have been maintained to minimal safe standards (with safety being the number one concern for travelling in the Town of Liberty Grove). These roads will have special signage, special marketing, notes for special and unique destinations on such roads, and more. Visitors and residents can enjoy leisurely drives along canopied rural roads and enjoy trees, wildflowers and more.
The program is similiar to the State of Wisconsin's "Rustic Roads" program, and will bring additional visitors to Liberty Grove, including Ellison Bay and Gills Rock, to enjoy the rural scenery. Roads identified for possible inclusion include Isle View Road (which has Isle View Park), Garrett Bay Road (with the Garrett Bay Boat Launch and Park), and Door Bluff Road (near Door Bluff Park), amongst other future roads.
How does one "special" rural road become a Hertitage Road? The initial application may come from any resident. The determination is made by the Town's highway committee based on a certain scoring point criteria, and then the recommendation must be approved by the Town Board. The first Heritage Road to be formally adopted is Waters End Road, spanning from the Waters End near the town Green Bay water access by the Door County Ice Cream Factory and ends on the Lake Michigan side at the "end" of Waters End Road.
This is an exciting program for residents and visitors alike to tour and enjoy. The Town of Liberty Grove's historic Heritage Road program will help create additional tourism for Sister Bay, Ellison Bay and Gills Rock, while preserving the scenery of the Town for generations to come.
