I wonder where technology will be fifty years from now.I am a child of the fifties. One of the millions “baby-boomers” spawned in peace-time America after the conclusion of World War II.

To say that life was different back then is an understatement. While we had plenty to eat and drink and clothes to wear, technology was only beginning to play an important role in the quality of our lives.

Television was in its infancy. We watched Lucy and Ricky and Ozzie and Harriet on their first run. The TV was black and white and the picture occasionally flipped and flopped but it was a miracle to have celebrities in our living room.

Like most families, we had one car. When dad went off to work we were marooned in our neighborhood, which we never noticed because it was normal to play at home.

We created our own thrill rides… a rope that swung out over a Pennsylvania hillside or a coaster that would careen down the sloping streets.

But each passing year brought more technology. One of the hot items in the sixties was a dishwasher. We had put a man on the moon and most families were still washing dishes by hand.

In the seventies it was microware ovens and cable television.

The eighties heralded the personal computer revolution.

The nineties birthed the Internet which brings us to where we are today, with gadgets that are interconnected with other gadgets that allow for us to do just about anything that we want.

But it makes me wonder …what will the next fifty years bring?

How will life be different for our children and grandchildren?

I have seen changes over my own lifetime that I never dreamed were possible. And the rate of change is increasing with each passing day.

It’s going to be a wild ride!

Richard, I am right there with you. All sorts of amazing things have happened. But we have taken to these changes like a fish to water. And I look back on "the good ole days" of my childhood with such fondness. It was simpler indeed, and many times I yearn for that. But still, I am acclimated.

I do wonder where we will be.

PS, love the bow tie... and one can tell that is you for sure!

Good morning Richard. I amvery much with Andrea on this. I do long for a simplier time and am moving in that direction personally. Technology has given us so very many tools, but in many ways taken away from one to one. I guess we'll see, or someone will, I'll be long gone.

Carol...

That would take some kind of crystal ball, wouldn't it? Thanks for jumping in.

Gabe...

You can say that again. But I thought that we would have flying cars by now. Lol and thanks.

Peter...

That is an interesting hypothesis that really could come to pass. Thanks so much.

Life will be different for our grandchildren. Will it be better? It will depend on the choices of our children.  Could today be their "good old days?"

Good morning Richard...

Your post brings to mind that 70's song ... Time keeps on slippin' into the future.  About the truth, like it or not.  Have a great weekend in all you do.

John

Richard, I doubt we can even begin to imagine what changes will be like 50 years from now.  I know my day job as an engineer has changed significantly over the last 20 years, and I know those changes will keep coming.  Bill

Richard,

I keep asking myself that same question.  I was born of a time when we had an Atari and did get a TI computer at the house while in high school.  Calculators were few and far between also.  Now my 3 1/2 year old daughter commands her iPad and uses it more efficiently than I can run mine.  And she is requesting her own computer because she can't run Flash on the iPad.  (She doesn't know what Flash is just that it doesn't work and there are games and videos and stuff that are not available to her!)  I have to wonder, what will it be like even in 10 or 20 years.  Are physical text books a thing of the past?

Then a random thought the other day, since schools are phasing away from teaching cursive writing, how will people "sign" their names.  I was raised when signing meant cursive not printing!

Richard, A very interesting question.  With the continual changes due to todays technology, we cannot even imagine what it will bring.  Like you say some of the items we have today we never imagined we would have. Amazing!

Richard you were such a little cutie!  Such a smile!!  We've all become so accustomed to having things at the tip of our fingertips......and thinking ahead 50 years is mind-boggling. Think of even 10 years from now....yikes!

The pace of change does seem astonishing when we look back to just our own childhood days - what will come by the time my 5 year old granddaughter is grown up is way beyond my ability to imagine I suspect. Though I hope for change that sustains the connections between people - and between people and this planet....

Also being a child of the 50's, I think we passed the best times a decade or so ago.

Your posts often make me feel nostalgic, and this one is no different. I've said it before -- the technology we have today is pretty incredible and certainly makes our lives easier, but I certainly think it comes at a price. Rarely do I see a teen or even pre-teen without a cell phone, iPad or other gadget in their hands. I really think we've sacrificed the human connection in so many ways. Thinking about what the future holds scares me.

I love childhood photos and memories. As children, we were outside from dawn to dusk and then some. However, I thought we would be flying around like the Jetsons by now! Perhaps we will in the next 50 years. :)

It's hard to imagine what the next fifty years will bring.  I can't imagine that anyone would have predicted the advances we've seen snice the 50's when thinking about it then.

That does sound like some high-tech medical gear! Cool, and thanks.

Andrea...

Yes indeed, I was blonde back then. Ah, those were the days! Thanks my friend.

Sheila...

It sounds like a dream to me ... I would love to go back to those simpler times. Thanks.

I was in downtown Columbus at our adminstrative / corporate office earlier today.  We have a mural about our companies history from 1956 to 2006 in the hallway there.  Our founder just died about a month ago.  There is a quote from the founder of HER (Harley E. Rouda Sr.)  about computers and the real estate industry on the mural and they plot the technology, our first Intranet, when Real Living was formed. I was thinking about technology and our industry this morning and on my way back home.

I was with friends last weekend and we were puzzling over slide rules .. what we did with them and why?  Obviously it did not stick.  My older sister got a Texas Instruments scientific calculator when we were still in high school and it was crazy expensive.

The future?  Mind boggling changes in the past 50 years and it is speeding up.  You were a cutie.

Kim...

Signatures now are more like pictures ... I notice that many of my clients use unique little scrolls to sign their name. Thanks for adding to the conversation.

Bobbie...

And yet we are still waiting on those flying cars! Thanks so much.

Anna...

Will there be an IPad 50? Wow, I wonder what it will be able to do. Thanks.

Nancy...

I wonder what we will lose? Our National Parks and Forests? Will they all fall to development and expansion? Who knows, only time will tell.

Bill...

I guess for everyone, that answer might be different. Thanks.
