BBC Travel named Austin one of America's Healthiest Cities, thanks is no small part to parks like Zilker Metropolitan Park and the miles of biking, hiking and running trails that traverse the city's landscape. The City of Austin has also created the It All Starts in Austin Parks! campaign to get its citizens healthy by promoting the benefits of utilizing the city's vast park system to incorporate a healthy lifestyle into their daily routine. Austin's own Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop (400 Neuces St) is getting people into the active lifestyle spirit by holding an evening bike ride group, the Mellow Ladies Ride.
Every Tuesday evening, the ladies of Mellow Johnny's ride out in groups throughout the City of Austin. Participants will learn the rules and dynamics of riding in groups. Riders leave Mellow Johnny's at 5:30pm. If you're interested, you can join up a half hour ahead of time at Juan Pelota Cafe in Mellow Johnny's for a little pre-ride refreshment.
For safety's sake, all riders are required to wear helmets, bring a flat fix kit and make sure they have plenty of food and water to be comfortable for the two hour ride through Austin. Also, make sure that your bike is in good working condition so as not to jeopardize you or your fellow riders' safety. Leave the headphones and radios at home so you can stay focused on the task at hand.
