Is your city government holding you down???

I have a rant that I need to get off my chest.  Before starting I want to profess my undying love for the city that I was raised in.  My family has had a business in Galveston for over 35 years.  My husband went to school at Teas A & M on the island.  He has been a fishing guide in Galveston.  He served as EMS captain for Tiki Island.  I LOVE Galveston.

We love Galveston yet I am feed up with the city government in Galveston.  I wish I could load people with city government power into a plane and fly them to other beachtowns across the nation.  My rant stems from this.  Don't we want to improve???

I have a lovely gentleman contact me to buy 2 lots.  He was born on the island and these 2 lots belonged to his family during his youth.  He has just moved a short bit away into Houston.  His family helped establish a drug store on the island.  For whatever reason they sold the lots.  His interest is to buy them for sentimental reasons. We look at the CMA's for both lots.  We offer to the city $2000 over the price that the market shows they should receive.  We get a response noting that his offer is being forwarded to a department that handles buying lots and restoring them as historical housing for the poor.

I have been a member of the Junior League in Galveston.  I have done charity work nationwide so I have no aversion to helping the poor yet I am confused as to why we have to build them historical homes?????  Can we just not help them get adequate housing.  I have been poor many times in my life yet nobody has built me a home.  I would like to also ad that my husband works with Habitat for Humanity.  I just think we have tons of low income housing in Galveston.  Houses that are provided by the government yet not maintained.

The Central part of Galveston is Filled with eye sores and low income housing.  So much so that many people do not want to  purchase real estate, or even lease in these areas.  Areas where PAYING buyers would be able to find great homes if the environment was cleaned up.

I know I am a Galveston agent so what comes out of my mouth should be rosy painted pictures of the land that I so love.  I would like to paint the realities of our beachtown.  We could be so great with so much beauty yet we cater to the poor to certain parts of the island.  We provide housing for people who could care less about finding a job.  Historical housing at that.  Our city has a lot to offer and by codling these people we are doing a disservice to the property tax paying citizens that deserve better.

This buyer and his wife sent the city a sentimental letter regarding their intent.  Now the lot sits vacant with an ugly abandoned slab starring at our cities visitors.  They wanted to beautify this community and enrich it with a home that would help us gain the momentum we deserve.  Instead the city choices time and time again to hold us back and cost tax payers hard earned money to build historical housing for the poor.

Like I said this is my rant for the day.
