Can a kitchen get any smaller than this?

Old door knob

I was asked to look at an older building in the Vallejo, CA to give an estimate for some repairs in a large apartment community. The apartment
community is undergoing a major renovation with another contractor, but I was asked to help with another section of the property that had some water related damages.

While walking through the vacant building which was built in the early 1900’s I was noticing the unique building practices and styles of that time. Every room, hallway, stair rail, and light fixture was a trip into the past. The building’s 100 year history included many improvements, remodels and change of use.

At some point the building was converted from a hotel to an apartment building. Since the hotel did not have a kitchen, a kitchen had to be added somewhere within each unit. I saw this kitchen and thought that it must be the world’s most compact kitchen. It appears to have been added in a space previously used as a small closet. I could almost touch the stove, sink and refrigerator at the same time with one hand.

Small kitchen remodel

Now that is a small kitchen remodel.

Barbara - What clean up? It is either already in the sink or burning on the stove.  :)

I do not know about FHA appraisal, but it is going to pass a HUD inspection Kristin.

They have targeted a market that is willing to put up with this sort of unusual thing Tammie.

I would have reservations about eating there Susan.

When the holiday season comes, I will have the photo at my hip, waiting for you to say something about the size of your kitchen.  lol

Thanks for the comment today!

When I first saw it, I had to do a double take Leilani. It just looked so odd, I couldn't believe what I was looking at.

Tom, that looks like it was a separate sink that some hotels have outside of the bathroom.  I get claustrophobic looking at it...

Tom, There's not going to be alot of gourmet cooking going on in that kitchen. I'd be afraid of getting electrocuted with the electric stove right next to the sink. Is that even safe?

It does look a bit intimidating Pamela.

If you think about boiling water on an electric stove, sometimes it boils over onto the coils. That's not a real problem, so I guess it's okay.

Sharon - You wouldn't have to worry about too many cooks in the kitchen though.

I have not seen one of those in years.  30 years ago, living in Los Angeles, they used to call those "Bachelor Apartments".  Does anybody remember those?

I don't know anything about a "bachelor apartment", but this sure looks like it would qualify as one Gary.
