The San Diego Zoo is home to 3700 different animals of more than 650 species. But by far the most popular animals at the zoo are the Giant Pandas.      Don’t you just love Pandas?

In 1996 a female named Bai Yun and a male named Shi Shi. The agreement was that San Diego would try to breed in captivity and send their cubs back to China for the next 12 years. Shi Shi was not interested in mating so Bai Yun was artificially inseminated and gave birth to a cub in 1999 that was eventually returned to China. Finally in 2003 Shi Shi was sent back and a new male named Gao Gao came to San Diego. With instant attraction, Bai Yun & Gao Gao had 3 more cubs that have since been sent to China.

In 2009, Bai Yun  had a male named Yun Zi who turns 3 years old on August 5, 2012 and lives at the zoo with his parents. Here is a picture of Yun Zi and his ice cake. He is said to be all boy; tears up his toys, loves to climb and weighs 180 lbs.

On July 29, 2012, Bai Yun gave birth to San Diego’s newest cub and is in seclusion for several months but mother and baby are doing great. You can go to the San Diego Zoo Panda Cam to see them. What is so amazing is that Bai Yun is over 20 years old and has now given birth to 6 cubs. Experts believe she may be nearing the end of her reproduction cycle. Also the sex of the cub will not be known for several months so they have not named the baby cub yet.

The zoo is packed full of people but very few lines but the Panda Trek had a 5 minute line to get to see Gao Gao (dad) and Yun Zi (3 yr son) and the wait was well worth it. They also had some red pandas on display while waiting in line.

There is several Panda Gift Shops and all the visitors seemed to be there buying up trinkets and stuffed animals.

Hi Kristine, A terrific post on one of the treasures we all enjoy at the zoo. You have provided some exxcellent information and it sounds like you really enjoyed this really special place. I marvel at the many times I have been there that I still get such satisfaction going there. Not mention the treasure trove of photos.

Hi Kristin,

I think Pandas are one of life's many great gifts. To me, the panda at the zoo is like the pearl to the oyster in the deep blue sea.

I remember visiting the San Diego Zoo and seeing the Panda exhibit several years ago and it gave me lasting memories. I've seen pandas at other zoos too; but by far, I thing San Diego does it best.

I love your blog post! Thanks for sharing something very near and dear to my heart.

Hi Kristin - I have loved pandas ever since I was a little girl, and I love Our cat, Charliethe San Diego Zoo.  We haven't been there since we moved up to northern California, but we do have a nice zoo here in Sacramento too (no pandas though).  I have the next best thing - and in my opinion even better.  I have a cat named Charlie who looks like a panda.

Hi William,

I really did enjoy the visit to the zoo and the Panda Enclosure is different than it was the last time I was there. I read where the son was just put back in the front part where viewing from the public is. He was moved in Jan 2012 so that mom and dad could have some date nights. Apparently date night was a success since she has just had a baby. I think reading about them is so fasinating.

Hi Patricia,

Our panda mother at San Diego is quite a celebrity. To be 20 years old and had 6 bear cubs is stardom and we have had more in captivity than any other US zoos to date.

I see the adults are more excited than the children at the zoo and the employees are just gaga over the birth too. Like I said "Panda Mania".

Hi Susan,

Your cat, Charlie, is adorable and does look like a panda but is a much better pet. Pandas are so remarkable and it amazes me how this giant bear can be so gentle and hold her little cub in her paw. I read where the cub at birth was about the size and shape of a stick of butter. Have a great weekend and thanks for the comments.

Hi Steve,

Probably under a lot of stress as he just became a father 5 days prior and is now taking car of his 3 year old son. We should have gone back a few hours later as he was probably walking or climbing somewhere but still I like this picture. He is a big guy and doesn't have to perform or follow anyone's orders. And in 9 years he has been a father 5 times so he is probably a little laid back now.
