Urban Gardening: The Biltmore Triangle Community Garden

On a little triangle of land at the intersection of 20th and Biltmore Streets NW, there is a lovely garden tended by dedicated neighborhood volunteers.  It's not one of these formal looking gardens that is perfectly done, and that's just what I love about it.  There is a sort of informal, wild quality.  It has the splashes of color that I can imagine inspiring one of the French Impressionist painters, and it is beautiful throughout the growing season.  It's one of my favorite places to pull over the car and pull out may camera.

If you are planning a move to or from the Washington, DC area, I can help!  I am licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.  You may call, email or text me at:

Hi Pat, I love these neighborhood gardens. I found one here in San Diego and was so surprised to find it. The selection of plants and flowers in the one you have here is really nice and does indeed reflect the pride of the neighborhood. It appears to have a ground cover between the plants and not grass? .

I have to admit when I think of DC and all the people in a tight spot I certainly don't think of a garden area. Do you have community garden areas where lots of families plant a garden and share the food?

Looks really lush and calming.  An oasis in the city.  Wish I had a green thumb.

Your words describing this little piece of heaven are just as beautiful as the pictures.  Lovely Pat!

William, I think the ground cover is a mix of grass and clover.

Todd, yes, there are quite a few community vegetable gardens around town.  Particiapants get a patch about 12 x 12 or so and can grow flowers or veggies.

Chris Ann, I've offerred my yard to a lot of people who live in apartments and condos (flowers in the front and veggies in the back), but so far no takers.

And Kerrie, thank you so much!

Community gardens like the Biltmore Triangle are elements that really enhance a neighborhood, bringing people together and also providing an aesthetic beauty.

Pat,

That is a great looking garden and I like the wildflower look to it also. :)
